Job Description:

The Director of Horticulture is responsible for the direction and effective operation of the Horticulture Team. This position plans, coordinates, and directs all the activities concerned with breeding, growing, horticultural management, garden displays, and other aesthetic enhancements. This leader must also subscribe to the Great Place to Work culture present across all Herschend properties. The Director must be available to work flexible schedules and long hours, especially during event and project periods. Qualified candidates will have a minimum of 4 years' experience in horticulture and people leadership.

Responsibilities and Duties

Oversight and management of Resort Horticulture, Gardens Horticulture, Forestry and Arborist

Coach and develop 3 direct report managers

Promote and encourage productivity

Special event planning, design and execution while managing all project deliverables within time limits.

Conduct market research, gather information, and negotiate contracts.

Work alongside team members and lead by example to build trust

Operate equipment such as chainsaws, skid steers, tractors, mowers

Provide required training including OSHA, WIP, etc.

Attend management meetings

Act as Manager on Duty on a rotational basis

Work with Director of Operations to create annual budget

Maintain working relationship with the Lake Management/Lake Maintenance company

Assist with dam inspections

Remain "weather-aware" to ensure preparation for inclement weather

Provide emergency response for storm damage affecting Callaway property or roadways

Instill the importance of operating machinery in accordance with expected use

Ensure team members operate in a safe, professional manner

All other duties as specified during staff training and onboarding.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

 

4+ years in a management or leadership position

Planning/project management experience

Financial acumen/experience creating a labor & materials budget

Experience overseeing a vast amount of land

Ability to work effectively with people of all ages and abilities.

Ability to stand for long periods of time, and work outside in extreme weather conditions such as, but not limited to, heat, cold, rain, wind.

Must be able to work weekends and all major holidays.

Able to lift at least 50 lbs.

ยท Proficient computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and Project Management Applications

Experience working with computers and software, especially Microsoft Office

Previous working experience where safety compliance and customer satisfaction are a high priority.

Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.

Must be able to pass a criminal background check

Must maintain all licenses and registrations related to areas of responsibility

Physical Requirements

Long hours are sometimes required

Potentially physically challenging work
