Intern Program

Internships provide students in the Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources with practical experiences in their area of study and introduces them to the professional world that they will encounter after graduation. Many employers seek interns through Warnell and choose to interview students here at the School.

Can you see yourself combing the beach for sea turtles, walking through the forest evaluating timber resources, or trekking through the wilderness with a bunch of teenagers? Course Credit

Student internship or summer field experiences could qualify for academic credit. Students interested in taking Forestry & Natural Resources Internship (FANR 3900) or Forestry & Natural Resources Practicum (FANR 3910) need permission to enroll in the course BEFORE starting their work experience.

Steps to pursuing Internship or Practicum Credit

1. Find out if your internship or field experience is eligible for class credit through FANR 3900 or 3910.  Read options below to find out who to ask.
2. Fill out and Return the Internship or the Practicum agreement form to Emily Saunders (fax or email).  Both student and employer must fill out this form. If you are eligible, you will be cleared for the appropriate course as soon as your agreement and Warnell MOU forms are received.
3. Have your employer sign the Warnell MOU - Internship/Practicum form and return that to Emily Saunders (fax or email). Once you have turned in BOTH the Internship/Practicum Agreement and the Warnell MOU, you will be cleared to register.
4.  Register for the course before you begin the internship or practicum experience.  This cannot be emphasized enough!

Forestry & Natural Resources Internship – FANR 3900

  • Open to students who are working PAID full time Natural Resource Internships for a minimum of 60 days over the summer (about 8 weeks)
  • Unpaid full time federal or state agency internships may also qualify for this class
  • 3 credit hours, fulfills field experience requirements for wildlife majors and may be used as upper level elective credit for other majors.  Be sure to check with your advisor to make sure you are meeting all requirements for your major
  • In most cases Emily Saunders can tell you if your Internship will meet requirements for FANR 3900.  Otherwise, you will need to see Dr. Sarah Covert, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, for permission.
Forestry & Natural Resources Practicum – FANR 3910
  • Open to students who are completing unpaid natural resource related experiences over the summer
  • 1 credit hour per 100 hours completed
  • Students wishing to take FANR 3910 will need to get written permission to enroll from Dr. Bob Warren.
