Deadline: Wed, 03/08/2023 - 12:00pm Employer: Georgia Forestry Commission Job Field: Forestry Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: Georgia Location Detail: Central/South or Dixon Memorial State Forest Job Description: General Forest Management – Internship (2 positions) EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Under the direction of the Regional Forester and local foresters, the intern may assist with CRP status reviews, cost share practice planning/certification, multiple resource-based forest management plans, technical forestry assistance to landowners, trapping & monitoring of insect and disease populations, storm damage assessments, and assistance with timber sales on state lands. It is the goal of the agency to make this internship a well-rounded experience. State Lands – Internship (2 positions) EXAMPLES OF DUTIES: Conduct timber cruising, stand mapping, timber harvest inspections, timber sale area, SMZ line marking, and timber marking - Conduct security load ticket reconciliation related to timber sales - Locate and mark State Property Boundaries and timber sale boundaries - Conduct seedling planting and survival surveys - Perform daily checks of equipment and routine maintenance and occasional repair - Construct and maintain facilities, inspect roads and grounds and perform maintenance as needed - Install repair and maintains fences, signs, and gates - Conduct stump cruises related to timber transaction complaints - Collect GIS data - Treat, monitor, and control invasive species - Assist with logistics or as needed on wildfires - Job duties are subject to change as circumstances dictate. · Field work will require extended work outdoors. Applicants should expect extremely hot and humid conditions, as well as exposure to insects/wildlife common to Georgia. Qualifications: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR BOTH: Student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest resources, or closely related major which includes core forestry coursework, from an SAF accredited school. Excellent customer service and organizational skills. Proficient in Excel, Word and other Microsoft Office applications. PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS –Rising seniors pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in forestry, forest resources, or closely related major which includes core forestry coursework, from an SAF accredited school.
