Deadline: Sat, 09/16/2023 - 12:00pm Employer: Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit and Department of Ecology at Montana State University Job Field: Fisheries Job Type: Assistantship Location: Montana Location Detail: Bozeman, Montana Job Description: Responsibilities We seek three talented, independent, and motivated Ph.D. students to conduct high-profile research on trout population dynamics in Blue Ribbon trout fisheries of southwestern Montana (the Madison, Big Hole, Ruby, and Beaverhead rivers). Three integrated and complementary studies will be conducted on 1) recruitment dynamics (natal origins and temporal and spatial survival), 2) adult mortality (interacting effects of water temperature, flow regime, abundance, harvest, gear types, and catch and release), and 3) recreational use (development of cutting-edge techniques using remote sensing, AI, and machine learning to comprehensively quantify river recreational use and user satisfaction). The ideal candidates will have an interest in applied management of trout fisheries, extensive field experience including fish sampling or human dimensions surveys, strong quantitative skills, commitment to publishing in peer-reviewed journals, and a strong desire to work collaboratively with each other and agency biologists, especially Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks personnel. The work is funded by Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks through the Montana Cooperative Fishery Research Unit to address trout abundance declines and use issues in these river systems. Dr. Timothy Cline will lead the recruitment study and Drs. Christopher Guy and Alexander Zale will co-advise the adult mortality and recreational use students. Qualifications: Applicants with a M.S. degree in fisheries science, human dimensions, aquatic ecology, or related disciplines will be given preference. Desirable qualifications include demonstrated quantitative and writing skills, extensive field experience, a desire to interact with and serve the public, and the ability to work as part of a diverse research team in remote and crowded locations.
