Job Description:

The Special Agriculture and Forestry Programs Manager will provide support in three key areas:

  1. Assisting landowners in enrolling in various Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) programs, such as ACEP, ALE, WRE, etc.
  2. Providing guidance to other land trusts engaging in carbon sequestration activities that are modeled after GALT’s successful, carbon sequestration project and related grant administration activities.
  3. Providing guidance to private landowners regarding longleaf pine – including associated habitats – restoration and enhancement.

NRCS Enrollment Support:

  • Explain the various NRCS easement programs to private landowners;
  • Evaluate potential protection properties for suitability for enrollment in NRCS programs;
  • Assist landowners in completing associated enrollment forms and related activities
  • Serve as a liaison between GALT, NRCS, and landowners;
  • Facilitate landowner and NRCS in coordinating associated due diligence required for consideration by NRCS and, if accepted, subsequent program enrollment;
  • Coordinate with GALT protection staff to complete enrollment of properties in a program if a property is accepted by NRCS.

Carbon Sequestration Support:

  • Contribute to conservation and resiliency efforts by providing support to other land trusts seeking to model peri-urban carbon sequestration projects, modeled after GALT’s carbon credit bank in Douglasville, Georgia;
  • Explain carbon sequestration protocols and related actions required to establish a carbon sequestration credit bank on land owned by other non-profit land trust;
  • Evaluate and analyze forested properties in the “rural gradient” to assess feasibility and eligibility for enrollment in carbon credit programs;
  • Assist land trusts in navigating the protocol/crediting approval process;
  • Develop digital toolkits to streamline carbon crediting/protocol compliance;
  • Regularly use desktop GIS programs (ESRI product suite) and Microsoft Office;
  • Administer associated grant, to include grant activity tracking, reporting, and invoicing.
  • Assist private landowners in explaining various carbon crediting programs and providing related enrollment assistance.

Longleaf Pine Restoration and Enhancement Support:

  • Lead a collaborative effort to engage forest landowners throughout southern Georgia and Alabama in efforts to survey and identify existing stands of longleaf pine and associated ecosystems;
  • Assess overall habitat quality and health;
  • Provide guidance on forest management habitat restoration and land;
  • Conservation/protection options, using best management practices and up-to-date science
  • Lead field surveys throughout native range of longleaf pine forests;
  • Provide associated technical advice and assistance to private landowners;
  • Build and maintain relationships and work cooperatively with conservation partners and other agencies;
  • Perform on-site monitoring and track and report progress of grant-supported objectives
  • Associated grant administration, reporting, and invoicing.

The ideal candidate will have a background in forestry, land management, and/or biology, with experience in each of these identified areas. Additionally, strong interpersonal and communication skills, as well as business experience are desirable.

Qualifications:

General Requirements:

  • Registered Forester.
  • Experience with land management/conservation programs available to private landowners
  • Familiarity with carbon sequestration or, at a minimum, an understanding of the involved principles and the underlying metrics.
  • Experience managing longleaf pine and bottomland hardwood ecosystems.
  • Experience in prescribed fire (FFT1 or FFT2 qualifications).
  • Experience in outreach and leading land management workshops.
  • Knowledge and experience related to Geographical Information Systems (GIS).
  • Project management and budgeting experience.
  • Experience with grant administration.
  • Experience in team collaboration and leading teams.
  • Completion of coursework in dendrology, silviculture or forest mensuration.
  • Experience in the practice of forestry, ecology, or wildlife biology in Georgia and Alabama.
  • Ability to communicate technical forestry concepts and information to diverse audiences through oral and written means.
  • Experience with outreach activities targeting forest landowners and the public.
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with conservation organizations, agency personnel and the public.
  • A valid driver's license and driving record acceptable to GALT.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Forestry/Natural Resources, or associated curriculum.  Ideally, three or more years’ experience in related areas; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
