Position Description

The Gary Dietrich Wildlife Management Apprentice Program is designed to equip associate, bachelor and master degree students with the practical skills needed to successfully implement wildlife management plans across a variety of landscapes. Apprentices also learn budgeting, facility and equipment maintenance and the customer service skills needed to run a private hunting operation or a state or federal wildlife management area or refuge. This position exists to bring organization and quality to the program. The Apprentice Coordinator will also be responsible for curriculum development, student recruitment, expert instructor recruitment and partnership development to include funding partners, private landowners, universities, state and federal wildlife agencies. This is a full-time position and the position reports to the Chief Operations Manager.

Impact

The Gary Dietrich Wildlife Management Apprentice Program equips college graduates with the practical experience necessary to become effective wildlife habitat managers. The achievements of its graduates will have a major impact on the quality of wildlife management throughout North America. This role done well contributes to the health and welfare of the organization and fellow employees and to the success of our mission statement - "The South Carolina Waterfowl Association exists to enhance and perpetuate South Carolina's wildlife heritage through education and habitat conservation".


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Maintain a steady flow of Apprentices through intensive recruiting
  • Partnership development to include funding partners, private landowners, universities, state and federal wildlife agencies.
  • Provide reports as needed
  • Mentor Apprentices
  • Maintain employee time cards and leave forms
  • Conduct employee surveys and interviews
  • Develop a class road map to hand to each Apprentice that details what will be completed each month/week
  • Attend weekly staff meeting
  • Efficiently onboard new apprentices to insure that each new employee is familiar with the layout of the properties and company policies.
  • Maintain detailed staff progression records to meticulously track completed training
  • Develop and uphold an accurate full-year training schedule to include training and off-site schedules.
  • Work with expert instructors to maintain training curriculum.
  • Recruit and maintain all expert instructors
  • Conduct seminars, workshops, and individual training sessions as needed
  • Manage program funding and sponsors
  • Coordinating and leading the annual Wood Duck Nest Box Day on Santee Cooper.
  • Coordinating with the Marketing Department to maintain accurate Apprenticeship media content information throughout the Website, Social media, and printed materials
  • Conduct employee evaluations at least once a year
  • Conduct Weekly housing inspections at Apprentice housing locations enforcing cleanliness.
Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor Degree in relevant field preferred
  • 10 years’ experience in wildlife, agriculture and or construction-related experience
  • Experience managing multiple employees
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds at a time

  • Active outdoors enthuses that exemplify wise use conservation.
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Preferred knowledge of various trade-oriented skills: mechanical, agricultural, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, etc.
  • Strong problem-solving skills

  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong ability to promote a positive team atmosphere
  • Exemplifies a proactive, hands-on approach, as well as a professional work ethic
  • Ability to work a non-traditional schedule including some nights and weekends

Salary:
Salary Range $70,000 - $80,000
