Given only every five years, this distinguished peer-nominated award recognizes an individual’s scientific achievements in forest research. Tsai will be recognized during the 26th…
Oak dominated forest types occupy 51.1% or about 12.4 million acres of Georgia’s 24.4 million forested acres. Oaks are some of our most important tree species as their acorns provide a food source and shelter for many wildlife species, the timber is among the most valuable of any tree species, and these forests help support a large recreational economy. Fertilizers and herbicides have been applied to 500,000 to over 1,500,000 acres annually in the southeastern United States over the last 50 years. Spotted lanternfly is a planthopper, a type of “true bug” that’s more closely related to stink bugs and aphids than “flies”, despite its name. It is native to Asia and was first detected in the United States in Pennsylvania in 2014. Spotted…
How trees stand and fall is centered upon the load they are under and how they hold against wind and gravity. Understanding tree structure, and how it bends and twists in the wind, is key to effective risk management along streets, in parks, and across landscapes. A publication supporting this subject matter is: “Standing Against The Wind: Introduction To Tree Structural Mechanics.” Warnell School of Forestry & Natural Resources Outreach…
Pine sawtimber and chip-n-saw stumpage prices in Georgia stabilized during the fourth quarter of 2023 following three consecutive quarters of decline. However, pine pulpwood stumpage prices continued to fall during the quarter. Hardwood sawtimber was the only product to see an increase in prices. Notably, these prices mostly remained above pre-pandemic levels. According to TimberMart-South (2023), pine sawtimber prices averaged $30/ton in South…
