American Forest Management, Inc. (AFM) seeks an experienced forester to join our team in the Northwestern area of Pennsylvania and Southwestern area of New York. This position will report to the District Manager and be responsible for all aspects of forest management (planning, harvesting, roads, budgeting, client reporting and silviculture) on 40,000 acres under AFM management in the region as well as other tasks assigned by the District and Region Managers.

AFM’s team of professionals is focused on meeting client needs by providing a complete range of forestry services including land and wildlife management, land sale and acquisition services, forest inventory and design, growth and yield modeling, cash flow projections, environmental and farmland services, appraisal, forest resource data management and harvest scheduling.


Key Responsibilities: 
•    Prepares budgets, annual operating plans, forecasts, and reports for clients.
•    Oversee the management of contractors in the implementation of forest operations.
•    Oversee the log and timber sales program, including harvest layout and permitting.
•    Manages contract negotiation for management operations.
•    Manage and execute easements, road use agreements, and other agreements on the property.
•    Road construction and maintenance program management.
•    Meeting with landowner/client to review management activities on their timberland.
•    Developing forestry consulting projects and preparing proposals.
•    Participation in industry meetings and co-ops.
•    Overnight travel and ability to function as a team member on projects throughout district and region.
•    Recreational lease administration and oversight.
•    Plan, design, and participate in forest inventory projects. Able to collect field data utilizing various sampling methods, and process cruise data.
•    Other tasks as assigned by the District and Region Managers.

Qualifications: 
•    Bachelor’s degree in forestry or equivalent.
•    7+ years field experience in Appalachian and Northern Hardwoods.
•    If offered within state of employment, have a current Registered Forester’s license or ability to become a Registered Forester, or its equivalent.
•    Experience with Environment Management Systems (EMS) Compliance to ensure third party SFI, FSC or Tree Farm Certification.
•    Excellent written and oral communication skills.
•    Strong listening capabilities with the ability to translate communications into appropriate action.
•    Ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects under strict time constraints in a fast-paced work environment.
•    Proficiency in basic computer programs such as MS Word, Excel, and Arc GIS.
•    Proficient in the use of handheld data collection and data collection software programs.
•    Ability to work within a team environment.
•    Ability to work in difficult field conditions, such as walking in steep 
•    Soft Skills: communication, teamwork, problem-solving, adaptability, attention to detail, time management and decision-making.

Work Environment: 
This role balances office work with remote field assignments. Fieldwork often involves solo ventures into remote forest lands accessed by private unimproved roads, necessitating off-road driving skills. Expect extended periods outdoors, including adverse weather conditions like summer heat and extreme cold. Travel to properties located in Pennsylvania and New York is required, potentially involving out-of-town and overnight stays (expenses covered).
