Dr. Bothwell’s research is motivated by a drive to contribute concrete, practical solutions for conservation genetic management of species facing rapid global change. She works at the intersection of population genetics, landscape ecology and spatial statistical modeling to investigate how ecological and evolutionary processes have shaped the distribution of species and genetic variation across the landscape. A key focus is building better…
I was born and raised on the Ft. Peck Sioux and Assiniboine Reservation of rural northeastern Montana. I received my A.S. from Dawson Community College in Glendive Montana, and then my B.S. and M.S. in Wildlife Biology from the University of Montana in 2009 and 2012, respectively. My M.S. focused on the conservation implications of bison reintroduction in central Montana and southern Saskatchewan. I obtained my Ph.D. in Ecology (2019) from…

Our lab is interested in understanding how biotic and abiotic factors influence the physiology of trees and how the physiological mechanisms of trees regulate ecosystem processes. Our main research themes are focused on water, carbon, and nitrogen cycling in forest ecosystems. Within these research themes, we explore both basic and applied questions. Indeed, much of our research is related to applied bioenergy production and sustainability…
