Job Description:

The Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship at Colorado State University is seeking applications and nominations for a nine-month, tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor specializing in Forest and Rangeland Biometry and Measurement. Applications from those interested in the development, teaching, and use of innovative sampling and statistical methods to inform natural resource inventory, monitoring, planning, and management are especially encouraged to apply. We seek scholars who will develop an internationally recognized, innovative, independent, and extramurally funded research program involving graduate and undergraduate students. Individuals with interest and expertise in one or more of the following:

 

  1. The application of statistical methods such as Spatial, Bayesian, Imputation, and/or Computation Statistics to support vegetation management including silvicultural practices, climate adaptation, and/or fire mitigation, control, and restoration.
  2. Innovative measurement platforms including satellite, manned and unmanned aerial and terrestrial systems to quantify and monitor trends in selected characteristics of forests and/or rangelands, including vegetative structure and biodiversity, biomass accumulation, and carbon.
  3. Modeling and estimation, including error/uncertainty, of important biophysical and social attributes associated with ecosystem goods and services, resilient social-ecological systems, and sustainability.

In addition, the successful candidate will be expected to exhibit leadership in, and passion for, teaching and contributing to undergraduate and graduate programs in the Forest and Rangeland Stewardship Department. Applicants should clearly demonstrate a commitment to diversity and inclusion in the department, college, and the university.

The Department’s mission is to promote interdisciplinary stewardship of forests and rangelands. We create and communicate knowledge to students, land managers, policymakers, peers, and the public. We foster the science and management of forests and rangelands. We integrate these disciplines with others in our college and university, focusing on 1) innovative graduate and undergraduate programs, 2) research programs that create knowledge to improve land stewardship, and 3) extension programs that empower the public to accomplish their stewardship goals. The Department currently has 13 tenure-track faculty and 5 non-tenure-track faculty with recognized expertise in ecology, restoration, and management of forest and rangeland ecosystems, fire science and management, and natural resource policy and planning. The Department offers undergraduate majors in Forestry and Rangeland Stewardship, Natural Resource Management, Restoration Ecology, and Fire and Emergency Services Administration as well as M.S., Ph.D. degrees, and a professional Master of Natural Resources. Faculty members may also direct graduate students in the interdisciplinary Graduate Degree Program in Ecology. The Department has over 500 undergraduates and 60 graduate students.



The Department of Forest and Rangeland Stewardship is housed within the Warner College of Natural Resources, which is home to five academic departments and several centers and institutes such as the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, the Colorado State Forest Service, Natural Resource Ecology Lab, the Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands, the Geospatial Centroid, and the Colorado Natural Heritage Program. These programs, institutes, and centers provide a foundation for research, education, and outreach. Linkages across departments and colleges, and with federal and state land managers and research centers, form a broader interdisciplinary foundation for increased impact. Strong relationships and partnerships with local, state, and federal agencies foster significant applied research opportunities for the successful candidate. We expect the incumbent to foster opportunities for our students to become future leaders in the stewardship of forests and rangelands throughout the world.

Qualifications:
Required Job Qualifications
  • Earned Ph.D., in Forestry, Rangeland Ecology and Management, Applied Statistics or a closely related field by the time of appointment.
  • Demonstrated expertise in forest or rangeland biometry or measurement.
Preferred Job Qualifications
  • Demonstrated potential to develop an externally funded research program that advances forest and/or rangeland management through the development and application of innovative statistical or sampling methods.
  • Demonstrated potential to sustain an excellent publication record.
  • Demonstrated commitment to effective teaching and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students.
  • Demonstrated potential to successfully engage in outreach to managers, landowners, rights holders, and the general public.
  • Demonstrated commitment to enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Salary:
$70,000 - 75,000; Commensurate with education and experience.
