Deadline: Thu, 03/07/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: Oklahoma State University Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management Job Field: Forestry Other Job Type: Full Time Location: Oklahoma Location Detail: Stillwater, Oklahoma Job Description: The Department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management (NREM) at Oklahoma State University (OSU) invites applications for a full-time, eleven-month, tenure-track position (70% research and 30% teaching) in applied forest ecology and silviculture. The research appointment is within the Oklahoma Agricultural Experiment Station (OAES) and the teaching appointment is in the Ferguson College of Agriculture. Research: Oklahoma has over 12 million acres of forestland ranging from loblolly pine plantation, shortleaf pine woodlands, and upland xeric oak. These ecologically diverse forestlands provide significant ecosystem services to a large number of forest landowners. We are seeking a scholar who brings expertise and passion for cutting edge research in silviculture and related areas of forest biology in cooperation with NREM faculty and other natural resource professionals. The expectation will be to establish a nationally recognized, externally funded research program to meet the needs of Oklahoma, the region, and the nation. Desirable areas of research include but are not limited to 1) silvicultural treatments to manipulate forest composition, function, structure, and productivity; 2) sustainability of forest production; 3) carbon balance and sequestration in forested ecosystems; and 4) landscape conservation, restoration, and biodiversity. Teaching: The faculty member will be expected to teach undergraduate courses in the SAF-accredited forestry undergraduate program that relate to silviculture and forest biology. In addition, the faculty member will be expected to develop a graduate level course in a forestry-related topic. Other teaching-related expectations include advising and mentoring undergraduate students, recruiting, mentoring, and training graduate students, and representing the NREM department at undergraduate recruiting events. Service: Service is an important component of this tenure-track position and is assumed to be a part of the research and teaching appointment. The faculty member will be expected to serve on Departmental, Division and University committees appropriate to interests, responsibilities, and organizational mission, and provide service to professional forestry-related societies (e.g., serving on committees, manuscript reviews, proposal reviews, etc.). Qualifications: Qualifications include: 1) a Ph.D. in Silviculture, Forest Ecology, Forest Ecophysiology or closely related field, and at least one degree (BS or MS) in forestry or closely related field required, 2) demonstrated ability and strong interest in instruction and advisement of undergraduate students, 3) demonstrated interest and ability to seek and secure extramural funding to support research and 4) ability and desire to work collaboratively with NREM faculty, faculty in other departments and/or universities, and forestry and natural resource professionals. Miscellaneous: About the Department, Division, University and Stillwater The department of Natural Resource Ecology and Management is comprised of 22 faculty with expertise in fisheries, forest, rangeland, and wildlife resources, plus 12 administrative and research support staff. More than 50 master’s and doctoral graduate students are advised by NREM faculty, and we serve over 230 undergraduate students. The Department is also the administrative home of the Oklahoma Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit.
