Job Description:

The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources at NC State University is seeking applicants for a full-time, 12-month, tenure-track, assistant professor position in forestry with emphasis on land retention, incentive programs, and taxation for non-industrial private forest landowners. The position is 75% extension, 15% teaching and mentoring, and 10% research.

 

The successful applicant will be a part of the Department’s 10-person Extension Forestry team of 4 faculty and 6 staff. The Department’s Extension team works collectively with faculty and staff in tourism and wood products to form the overall Extension program in the College of Natural Resources. This position is based in Raleigh, North Carolina, but requires travel throughout North Carolina. The successful applicant will provide leadership in designing, implementing, and evaluating public educational programs consistent with the philosophy, policy, and overall educational objectives of North Carolina Cooperative Extension.

 

The incumbent will build collaborative partnerships with a variety of stakeholders including county Extension personnel, landowners, state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, natural resource professionals and others to increase the visibility and reach of Extension Forestry programs. They will be responsible for developing and delivering educational programming to diverse audiences, including stakeholders from diverse socio-demographic groups and with varied background knowledge of forest management. The ideal candidate will have a combination of knowledge, skills and experience that will allow them to work in areas relevant to land retention, including heirs property, estate planning, and conservation easements; cost-share programs, including issues around equitable access and participation; and income and property taxation.

Scope of Duties:

Develop an innovative, state-wide extension program, to include evaluation and accountability.

Perform discipline-guided inquiry that is in line with their Extension program.

Seek external funding in support of extension-relevant projects that support graduate students and expands the impact and reach of their extension program.

Cultivate and develop inclusive and equitable partnerships and collaborations with county Extension personnel, landowners, state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, natural resource professionals and other stakeholders

Work in support of Cooperative Extension Service Extension field faculty in North Carolina’s 100 counties and the Cherokee Indian Reservation.

Teach Introduction to Forest Science (FOR 252) or other appropriate course each year in support of the Department’s curricula.

Engage in service to the Department, College and/or University and external professional organizations.

 

Qualifications:

Minimum Education and Experience

A terminal degree in forestry, natural resources, agriculture, social sciences, or law (e.g., with emphasis on environmental, natural resources, or agriculture) relevant to non-industrial private forestry.

Strong oral and written communication skills

Excellent time and resource management skills

Self-directed and self-motivated with the ability to multi-task and set priorities

Basic knowledge of educational technologies and their appropriate use in the development and delivery of educational programs

Demonstrated ability to conduct public outreach

Demonstrated ability to teach forestry-related coursework

Demonstrated ability to plan, organize, work, teach and interact with stakeholders from diverse socio-demographic groups and with varied background knowledge of forest management

Education, training, or experience working with traditionally underserved and limited resource landowners

Knowledge of key land retention barriers and opportunities for non-industrial private forest landowners, in particular for traditionally underserved groups

Knowledge of key principles related to forest management, estate/succession planning, conservation easements, income and property taxation

Demonstrated ability to plan and conduct applied research

Evidence of the commitment to uphold and promote NC Cooperative Extension’s commitment to diversity and the College of Natural Resources values of Equity and Inclusion, Community, Collaboration, Innovation, and Sustainability

Willingness to drive extended distances statewide

Ability to apply professional scheduling including the delivery of evening and weekend educational programs and activities as determined by programming and collaborator needs

Preferred Qualifications

Degree in Forestry from an SAF-accredited program

Law degree (JD, MSL, MLS) with experience or emphasis in Environmental or Natural Resources

Knowledge of the Land Grant Mission and the role of Extension

Demonstrated ability to secure external funding in support of the land grant mission

Knowledge and experience planning, conducting, and evaluating participatory Extension or non-formal education programs

Education or training in land retention concerns and strategies, forestry incentive programs, and income and property taxation

Demonstrated ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary research teams

Demonstrated ability to supervise student or volunteer participation in applied research and extension

Ability to obtain/maintain status as a North Carolina Registered Forester

Required License(s) or Certification(s)

A valid NC Driver’s license is required and must be maintained as a condition of employment.
