Job Description:

This is an exciting new Invertebrate Ecologist position with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). The successful candidate, in collaboration with the invertebrate research program lead, will be responsible for conducting and supporting biological research focused on imperiled terrestrial invertebrates and their associated habitats throughout the state of Florida. The successful candidate will collaborate with agency staff and other researchers to prioritize and implement projects that lead to a better understanding of invertebrate diversity, conservation, and management. The candidate will assist with grant proposals to fund research, analyze and publish data in peer-reviewed journals, books, and proceedings. The candidate will represent the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission at professional and public meetings and serve on inter-divisional and inter-agency teams on invertebrate-related conservation and management issues. He/she will also provide technical assistance and prepare technical and non-technical reports, such as annual reports, final reports, and contract reports to granting agencies. He/she will also assist with managing budgets and may supervise activities of seasonal and temporary staff. Overnight and weekend travel is sometimes required. Work weeks are 40 hours, with overtime sometimes available. This position is supported by recurring funding and has no anticipated end date.

Job duties and responsibilities:

- Responsible for conducting and supporting biological research focusing on imperiled terrestrial invertebrates and their associated habitats throughout the state of Florida.

- In collaboration with the supervisor, designs, conducts, analyzes, and publishes field and laboratory research.

- Communicates research results in reports, scientific publications, and presentations.

- Collaborates with internal and external partners and colleagues, including by serving on teams, committees, and groups, to advance imperiled invertebrate research and accomplish management and conservation objectives.

- Routine identifications, both afield and in the laboratory, and cooperation with taxonomic experts.

- Collects biological specimens and samples.

- Performs related work as required, including administrative and outreach responsibilities.

 

Qualifications:

Required knowledge, skills, and abilities: Knowledge of: invertebrate natural history, conservation, management, and ecology; invertebrate data collection and sampling protocols; invertebrate taxonomy and systematics; principles of research and analysis. Skills: use of a variety of invertebrate trapping and sampling techniques; familiarity with dichotomous keys and field guides; quantitative skills; previous relevant field experience; familiarity with ArcGIS, R, word-processing, spreadsheet, and database software packages. Ability to: design studies, collect, record, and analyze data relating to biological research; utilize problem-solving techniques; prepare written reports; assist in preparing peer-reviewed journal articles and popular articles for outreach; use laboratory and field equipment including microscopes, 4WD vehicles, and boats; maintain a valid driver’s license; communicate effectively and establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; assist in planning, organizing, and coordination of work assignments.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

- A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the physical or natural sciences and two years of experience in one of the physical or natural sciences; or

- A master’s degree from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for one year of the required experience; or

- A doctorate from an accredited college or university with major course of study in one of the educational areas listed above can substitute for the required experience.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Master of science degree or doctorate in Biology, Wildlife Ecology, Zoology, or Entomology

- Experience conducting ecological research and surveys targeting invertebrates

- Previous work with rare and imperiled species

 

Salary:
$23/hour to $25/hour (1980 hrs per year)
