Job Description:

We at the Monteith Shop with the University of Wyoming are seeking an ambitious and driven individual to lead the support effort for a new deer monitoring program as an Assistant Research Scientist. This person will be part of a collaboration between the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department with the goal of monitoring five mule deer herds within the state of Wyoming. This position will focus on assistance with field logistics and data collection, especially as it relates to helping coordinate capture efforts, monitoring animals for survival, and carcass recovery to facilitate evaluation of cause of mortality. Key duties include responding to mortality notifications, retrieving carcasses in the field, collecting specific tissue samples, and assisting with collar retrievals. Subsequent to field-focused work, the person may contribute to preliminary evaluation of animal movement and survival, and assist with disseminating results to the public. This work will be done with multiple cooperating agencies and people therein, and will require strong organizational skills and commitment to building and maintaining strong working relationships. One of the five herds being monitored is the Wyoming Range herd. The research scientist will be expected to interface with ongoing research through collaboration and communication with research personnel and graduate students in the Monteith Shop.

This position will be full time and includes a salary of approximately $35,000 yearly plus full benefits (i.e., health insurance and retirement). Employment will be housed within the Monteith Shop through the Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Wyoming, but will mostly be overseen and work closely with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department and in particular, the Science, Research, and Analytical Support Unit. Ideally the candidate will start as soon as possible, and will be supervised by Dr. Kevin Monteith and Dr. Embere Hall with the University of Wyoming and Wyoming Game and Fish, respectively.

Qualifications:

Preference will be given to applicants with (1) a BS in ecology, wildlife biology, conservation biology, or a related discipline, (2) previous experience in field-based research in wildlife ecology with preference for experience in assessing cause of mortality, (3) ability to communicate with private landowners, agency personnel and university staff, (4) outstanding interpersonal communication skills, (5) a demonstrated ability to work as a collaborative team member, and (6) a demonstrated ability to work independently and sometimes in remote locations under variable and often inclement conditions.

Benefits:

approx. 35k
