Deadline: Fri, 05/20/2022 - 12:00pm Employer: Mississippi State University Job Field: Forestry Job Type: Full Time Location: Mississippi Job Description: The successful candidate will participate in the Department's statewide forestry Extension and research program in the specialized areas of silviculture, forest health, and related subjects. Responsibilities include assessing the educational needs of various forestry audiences and constituencies along with planning, developing, and implementing educational programs to meet the needs of targeted audiences. Travel related to stakeholder educational programming is expected. Program methods and techniques will include short courses, workshops, field days, participation in professional meetings and conferences, demonstrations, mass media, publications, in-service training, and individual contacts. Audiences and collaborators will include landowners, natural resources professionals, public and private organizations, 4-H and youth organizations, and the general public. Evaluating program quality and effectiveness over the short, intermediate, and long terms will be an essential duty to ensure accountability and program improvement. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a regionally, nationally, and internationally recognized Extension program- both applied research and outreach- in silviculture and/or forest health. The candidate will also be expected to seek and obtain extramural funding to sustain their Extension and research program. In addition, one course per year will be taught that supports the Department of Forestry’s academic programs that can potentially also meet graduate-level campus and distance-learning forestry requirements. In-service education to external audiences will also be provided. Qualifications: Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. degree with a specialization in silviculture, forest management, or related field and at least one degree in forestry, preferably the baccalaureate, from an accredited professional forestry program. Formal education should reflect an emphasis in silviculture and related aspects of forest health and/or forest biology. Importance will be placed on demonstrated excellence in program team participation, oral and written communication, and interpersonal skills. All but dissertation (ABD) applicants will also be considered. Preferred Qualifications: Education and experience in stand management, managing and assessing signs, symptoms, and impacts of biotic (e.g., forest insects and pathogens) and abiotic (e.g., fire, wind, drought, water) disturbances, vegetation management, and forest regeneration. An established record of scholarly publications; demonstrated ability or potential to secure extramural funding; experience in teaching at the university level in on-campus and distance-learning formats. Professional experience effectively working as part of an Extension team; a willingness to spend significant time away from campus, which will include some late nights and weekends. Exceptional candidates will have experience with forest management and developing and justifying silvicultural prescriptions. Opportunities exist for research collaboration with College of Forest Resources faculty, federal and state agencies, forest industry, resource managers, and private landowners. Miscellaneous: The Department of Forestry is one of three departments in the College of Forest Resources and the Mississippi State University’s Forest and Wildlife Research Center. The Department has two SAF-accredited undergraduate degree programs (Forestry and Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation), offers MS and PhD degrees in Forestry, conducts research, and houses Mississippi’s Extension programs in forestry. The Department has excellent facilities in Thompson Hall on the campus of Mississippi State University. A new multi-million-dollar greenhouse complex dedicated to forestry is now being completed and will provide multiple environments for research. The MSU John W. Starr Memorial Forest, an 8,244-acre research, teaching and demonstration forest; the Sam D. Hamilton Noxubee National Wildlife Refuge; and Tombigbee National Forest are each near the University and used for teaching, research, and outreach activities. The University also owns Bulldog Forest properties throughout the state that may be available for research activities.
