This position is based from your home office, but with regional responsibility in the Southeastern USA. The ideal candidate resides in Arkansas, Texas, Mississippi, or Louisiana. This position is full time and provides the opportunity to work in a variety of forest ecosystems with a paradigm-shifting carbon company. The Associate Forester will represent Forest Carbon Works and its parent, Chestnut Carbon in his/her region, reporting to the Southeast Regional Forester. Primary responsibilities include completing carbon inventories using the Forest Carbon Works smartphone inventory device, conducting seedling survival surveys, and assisting with data processing needs. The Associate Forester may also represent the organization either with the local Regional Forester or by themselves at public facing events such as in person or virtual conferences, workshops, and recruiting events. This position will be a hybrid field-desk role with frequent, regional, and less-frequent, national travel. Chestnut Carbon was founded and backed by Kimmeridge, a US-based private equity firm with offices in New York and Denver. This role requires the individual to be based in the US Southeast with modest travel. Responsibilities: Collection of forest inventory data using a smartphone device and via traditional forest mensuration techniques; regular communication with program staff. Independent travel to sites to complete inventory work and correspondence with client landowners is required. Provide technical support for afforestation design, site preparation, and seedling procurement. Frequent and sometimes extended, overnight travel to property sites. FCW Member harvest oversight including on-site verifications pre- and post-harvest. Assisting with third-party landowner verifications for the FCW Conserve carbon program. Processing data collected using Forest Carbon Works’ programs including photo digitization and species identification. Conducting seedling survival surveys on newly established afforestation properties throughout the region. Assisting with planting plan design for Chestnut Carbon’s afforestation program. Forest Management Plan development/adaptation to meet Forest Stewardship Council’s requirements Improved Forest Management carbon program requirements. Representing Forest Carbon Works and Chestnut Carbon at regional events, workshops, and other outreach opportunities. Assisting with forest management expertise and support throughout the carbon project development process for the FCW landowner pipeline and team members. Qualifications: Undergraduate degree in forestry or related field REQUIRED. Minimum of 1-3 years regional experience in forest inventory field work. Experience with traditional forest inventory techniques. Strong tree species identification in SE forest types. Familiarity with typical management practices for SE forest types. Comfortable working in brush, undergrowth, and thickly forested areas, frequently alone, in remote areas, and in various weather conditions. Must Possess a valid U.S. driver’s license. Proficient in use of smartphone technology (and experience troubleshooting issues), digital cameras, GPS devices, Microsoft Word and Excel. Ability to travel regionally (frequently). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Strong organizational and time management skills. Passionate about sustainability. Willingness to roll up your sleeves and thrive in a high growth and fast-paced environment. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Authorized to work in the United States. Salary: The base salary for this position is expected to be between $50,000-65,000, subject to the chosen candidate’s experience and qualifications, determination of which is made in the sole discretion of Chestnut Carbon. Benefits: All employees are eligible for medical benefits on their first day of employment. Chestnut Carbon pays 100% of the cost of the employees’ health/dental/vision insurance. During each fiscal year of employment, employees will be eligible to earn a discretionary annual incentive bonus, based on company and individual performance targets.
