Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

The Urban Forestry/Environmental Conservation, contract intern will engage in urban forestry and natural resource management practices, assessments, programs, and planning for public streets, parks, and facilities. The intern will also learn stewardship concepts and practical applications through urban tree and natural resource management projects.  Participants will be involved in developing community partnership by effectively communicating with the public and will perform vegetation analysis and engage in facets of urban forest management planning. 

Assists the Community Forester in daily operations as needed.


● Uses knowledge in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to map urban trees.
● Uses knowledge to assist in the development of an urban management plan.
● Uses knowledge and skills to assist with consulting, field data collection, data entry, the production of 

     reports and maps, information research, field research, as well as perform manual field activities.

● Evaluate the health and structural integrity of Athens Clarke County’s urban trees as well as relevant  

      ecological factors of ACC’s urban forest.

● Participate in fieldwork activities including tree identification, tree inventory, and the visual 

     assessment of trees in urban and natural settings.

● Use inventory equipment such as GPS receivers, smart phones, tablets, field computer, personal 

     computers, printers, and field forestry tools such as clinometers, diameter tapes, and pruning tools. 

● Cultivate community stewardship and environmental sustainability by responding to questions about 

     plants, culture and management, and through outreach projects.  Assist with environmental 

     sustainability topics and effectively communicate that knowledge to the public.

● Learn about trees and employ natural resource management activities and techniques.

● Learn to implement and follow proper safety practices.
