Job Description:

The Wildlife Conservation Section is offering 3 seasonal positions for summer-fall 2024. The employees will primarily be conducting acoustic and mist-net surveys for bats throughout Georgia. Applicants must be willing to work for long days (> 10 hours) under physically challenging conditions (e.g., hot days/nights walking through mixed habitats). Activities will include collecting bat acoustic calls using the NABat protocol, downloading and organizing call data, and conducting call analysis using bat call ID programs as well as mist-netting for bats. Other activities may include bridge and culvert surveys, other small mammal surveys and other work as needed.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have a valid class C driver’s license. Applicants must have some college-level coursework in ecology, wildlife biology, or a related field. Applicants should be in good physical condition and be able to work at night and in hot, humid field conditions where encounters with snakes, alligators, biting insects, etc. are possible. Applicants should be comfortable performing data entry and other computer-based work.

 

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to individuals that have current rabies pre-exposure prophylaxis, have experience with bat mist netting, bat handling and identification techniques, acoustic detectors and bat acoustic experience. Some experience using a GPS and GIS is also preferred.

Miscellaneous:

Duration: May 16, 2024 through fall, end date flexible depending on availability (limited term of 6-months)

Salary:
$14.00 per hour; usually working 40 hrs/week

Benefits:

Travel to study sites will be by state vehicle, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. Lodging will be provided during surveys.
