Job Description:

Advises state, industrial, tribal, and private forest/plant nursery managers, and growers on a variety of topics relating to production and deployment of native plants for reforestation and restoration, e.g. seed collection, processing and storage; species selection; seed source selection and seed zone identification; seed and vegetative propagation protocols; crop scheduling; culturing techniques (e.g. fertilization, irrigation, pruning, etc.); integrated pest management; proper seed and seedling handling and storage; container or bareroot production, site selection; soil management and greenhouse activities.

 

Advises state, industrial, tribal, and private organizations on plant genetics and germplasm conservation. Provides guidance on and/or assistance with by sharing best available science and management practices on : 1) the use of foundational genetic principles (including diversity and adaptation) to support restoration and reforestation with genetically appropriate plant material; 2) deployment of plant material with improved pest resistance, timber yield and quality, or increased biomass production; 3) protocols to address threatened, endangered, or sensitive native plants, 4) seed source and seed zone guidance to insure plant material is genetically well-adapted to outplanting sites and 5) challenges with climate variability impacts and forest health issues.

 

Provides advice on national policies and regulations relating to Reforestation, Nursery, and Genetic Resources (RNGR) activities as requested. Prepares national reports on tree planting, native species restoration, and other RNGR activities in cooperation with Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA), Forest Health Protection (FHP), National Forest System (NFS), State and Private Forestry, Research and Development (RD), and/or other departments and agencies.

 

Leads technology transfer efforts: 1) attends and presents at technical conferences and workshops; 2) reviews technical reports, research publications, professional journal articles, presentations, online materials, etc. to share information with nurseries; 3) analyzes research for potential application and use in nursery, restoration, and reforestation programs to meet identified needs; 4) disseminates information to assist nurseries in implementing operational practices, improving quality and efficiency, and resolving challenges; 5) author and/or co-authors reports and/or articles that lend support to nursery, restoration, and reforestation programs and 6) partners with external agencies to host nursery meetings and workshops, both nationally and internationally.

 

Prepares project logistics (e.g. budget, grants, and procedures) associated with potential administrative studies, demonstration projects, and other technology development projects, working with internal and external partners and organizations.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

Duty Location: This position is allowed to be remote within 275 miles driving distance/road miles of the Regional Office in Atlanta, Georgia.
