Job Description:

This is a Staff Officer position that serves as a member of the Forest Leadership Team (FLT), providing management and oversight of a complex Research organization.

 

Requirements for this position includes excellent management and leadership skills, supervisory experience, communication skills, budget, resource management skills, the ability to think strategically and to be able to work collaboratively in order to plan the unit’s restoration efforts through an integrative approach. Serves as the science manager for USFS-SR in regard to the strategic development, management and integration of natural resource related research programs at the SRS. Provides leadership and guidance in the development of technology and information needed to address environmental compliance, operations and NERP support.

 

USFS-SR Research serves a duel role of supporting compliance with Federal and State laws, and DOE policy and directives, and of developing nationally important environmental research as a National Environmental Research Park. USFS-SR has achieved regional, national and international recognition for its research on endangered species, ecological restoration of savannas and wetland systems, bioenergy, hydrology and water quality, wildfire home ignition, smoke and fuels management, radiological emissions, inventory technology and wildlife management through large scale logistically complex landscape studies. USFS-SR promotes program development through partnerships with other federal agencies, state and private organizations to leverage expertise and resources. USFS-SR also works with the Savannah River National laboratory (SRNL), and the Savannah River Ecology Lab (SREL) to develop joint R&D projects and proposals to meet site missions.

 

This position also requires the incumbent to have interagency and partnership experience, the USFS-SR is located on a Department of Energy site where the Forest Service has the sole responsibility for land and resource management. Serves as the key representative in working with federal and state agencies, 35 or more cooperating universities, private industry and other non-government groups in designing, and managing joint research initiatives. Effectively utilizes the technical and scientific skills of cooperators and USFS-SR staff to develop strategic direction, revise program goals, and monitor progress
