This is a full-time position that will report directly to the Director of Planning & Inventory. Although primarily office-based, 20-30% of the role’s time will be spent in field locations, with some overnight travel required. There is a strong preference for this role to be in a Southern Timberlands Region office; however, consideration will be given to area offices for internal candidates. Background: Our Planning & Inventory personnel support the Forestry Resource Units, Business Development, Forest Productivity and Corporate Finance activities. This support includes sampling design, statistical analyses, inventory analyses and reporting, analyses of growth and yield models, and inventory volumetrics. Our team also designs and implements harvest scheduling models for long-range planning. In this position you will have a significant role in building strategic harvest plans at the unit level using harvest scheduling models and will provide input to improve inventory quality. Success is dependent on the ability to quickly establish yourself as a consultant and subject matter expert to all levels in the organization. Key Functions: Develop long-term strategic harvest schedules Consult with unit managers to support tactical marketing and harvesting opportunities Work with the regional inventory analyst to support inventory design and improve inventory efficiency Interact with internal software application developers who build and maintain database systems Assist during third-party SFI audits Attend meetings and maintain active relationships with university cooperatives Work with other team members to analyze new growth models and determine their usefulness in inventory, harvest scheduling, and habitat conversation planning Qualifications: Masters degree in Forest Biometrics, Biometrics, Quantitative Silviculture or a related field OR a Bachelors degree (or higher) in Forest Management, Natural Resources, or related field with at least 8 years’ experience in forestry, inventory, GIS, etc. Strong Microsoft Office skills Experience in statistical analysis Knowledge of silviculture and growth-and-yield models applicable to the region Knowledge of regional, state and federal laws and Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) objectives Working knowledge of GIS software Strong interpersonal and communication skills Preferred Qualifications Programming skills in higher level computer language (C++, Access, SQL, R) Experience in harvest scheduling, forest biometrics or inventory management Experience with REMSOFT’s Woodstock Modeling Platform, including spatial planning tools Miscellaneous: About Timberlands We believe trees are a remarkable resource that can and should be managed responsibly to make a range of products that meet human needs, while also providing recreation, wildlife habitat, and other important ecosystem benefits.
