Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills
Lead Biometrician in the Forest Planning and Inventory group. The individual will have a lead role in key company initiatives including carbon modelling, growth and yield modelling, harvest scheduling, silviculture, forest inventory, year-end inventory, and forest data management and design.
Forest Biometrics:
  • Assess, validate and document company forest and carbon growth systems to help ensure reliable and consistent future forest timber and carbon estimates.
  • Assess, validate and document company tree merchandizing systems to help ensure reliable and consistent current and future forest timber estimates.
  • Assist with/conduct validations and verifications of growth and yields for projecting regional harvest schedules.
Forest Analytics and Forest Carbon:
  • Lead the testing of forest inventory and forest carbon measurement and verification methodologies
  • Conduct analysis and utilize applied statistics for forest inventory, forest carbon offset and forest planning projects.
  • Conduct strategic and tactical planning exercises to support Timberland’s harvest scheduling, silvicultural investments and acquisition and disposition opportunities.
  • Provide technical support and data analyses to create and improve decision support tools.
Data Quality Assurance/Control:
  • Develop and document procedures to ensure the validity and credibility of all resource data, harvest scheduling outputs, analyses and reports.
  • Support and assist with overseeing the annual year-end forest inventory tabular data update that produces revised forest inventory and carbon estimates by region and product.
  • Ensure procedures for inventory updates are understandable and accurately implemented.
  • Ensure that sample designs and intensities are consistent, reproducible and appropriate to the resource and management objectives.

Requirements:

  • Advanced Degree (MSc. or higher) in forest biometrics, forestry, natural sciences, resource management, statistics, or related field
  • Demonstrated forest industry experience (2+ years) and track record of success
  • Advanced demonstrated proficiency with growth modelling systems, such as the Forest Vegetation Simulator (FVS) or the Simulator for Managed Stands (SiMS)
  • Demonstrated proficiency administering and communicating advanced statistical analyses
  • Demonstrated skills performing advanced data management/ display techniques with statistical software such as R or SAS
  • Strong working knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server Database Designs
  • Advanced knowledge of sampling theory
  • Excellent project management skills and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Effective communication and presentation skills with District Forest Managers, Senior Field Forests, and Region Manager/Director level leaders
  • Primarily in an office setting
  • Some time may be spent outdoors and subject to adverse weather and terrain conditions
  • Travel may be required (+-20%)
