BioPark Checkerspot Butterfly Science Member

 

 

Summary:

 

American Conservation Experience, a nonprofit Conservation Corps, in partnership with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the Albuquerque BioPark, is seeking 1 Member to contribute to conservation of the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly alongside BioPark and USFWS Staff.

Position Overview: The member in this position will support Albuquerque BioPark Staff with the captive-rearing effort for the Sacramento Mountains checkerspot butterfly, an imperiled insect subspecies native to New Mexico. The member will assist with biological husbandry and horticulture, garden management, caring for and germinating host plants, developing and documenting host plant growth and propagation protocols, seed collection of host plants, and documenting protocols and drafting reports. The member will work closely and be supervised by the New Mexico Ecological Service Field Office (a division of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service) and the Albuquerque BioPark staff.

 

This individual placement is meant to facilitate professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with professionals. This could include gaining experience in different conservation fields and shadowing different work groups.

The Albuquerque BioPark is owned by the City of Albuquerque and is located along the Rio Grande. The mission of the Albuquerque BioPark is to foster meaningful connections between people and nature. The Botanic Garden includes 32 acres of exhibits and showcases plants from the American Southwest and around the world. The BUGarium is one of the country's most elaborate exhibits dedicated to bugs and arthropods.

Start Date: Feb./March 2023 (part-time)

Estimated End Date: Feb./March 2024

*a 52-week minimum commitment is required *

Schedule: Duties will primarily be carried out Monday - Friday. Bi-weekly totals should not exceed 40 hours (part-time). A flexible work schedule may be required, which could involve work performed outside of normal work hours including on weekends and/or holidays. Time off may be granted and requests should be directed to ACE and the site supervisor for approval.

Position Benefits

Living Allowance: The ACE Member is expected to contribute ~20 hours/week (part-time) and will receive a living allowance of $250/week to offset the costs of food and incidental expenses, dispersed bi-weekly.

AmeriCorps Education Award Program: This position may be eligible for a 900-hour AmeriCorps Education Award while serving under the EAP 2022/23 grant year program, valued up to $3,447.50 upon successful completion.

AmeriCorps Provided Childcare Coverage & Loan Forbearance: AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for qualifying child care coverage and federal loan forbearance. Additional enrollment steps are required.

Public Land Corps Hiring Authority: Members serving under this agreement may be eligible for a federal hiring authority upon completion of their term of service. Housing: Housing is the responsibility of the member and not provided by ACE, the USFWS, or the Albuquerque BioPark.

Gear Allowance: ACE members will have up to $130 to spend on eligible gear purchases. Eligible gear for this position includes sunhat, gardening gloves, boots and other PPE for working outdoors, and must be approved by ACE staff prior to purchase.

Provided Training/Orientation: ACE members will receive position specific training and an orientation outlining ACE policies and procedures, clear guidance on prohibited activities, and networks for support.

Required:

- Members must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident, as required byU.S. government contracts

Willing and able to represent ACE and the partner organization in a professional, positive, and enthusiastic manner.

- Ability to be both self-directed/work alone, and be a positive, contributing member of a group.

- A valid driver's license and an insurable driving record (documentation to be provided upon request).

- Willing to undergo and must pass the required three-part criminal history check.

- Ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.

- ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term.

- ACE Members will need to complete bi-weekly timesheets, beginning of term feedback forms, end of term evaluations and for longer terms, a mid-term evaluation.

- Member may not participate in any prohibited activities as listed in the Member Service Agreement or as defined by AmeriCorps.

Preferred:

- Competitive applicants for this position can hold or be pursuing a degree in biology, entomology, ecology, botany, horticulture, or similar discipline and/or have relevant experience in subject areas such as biology, botany, or animal husbandry.

- Knowledge and experience of gardening and/or animal husbandry.

- Ability and willingness to work both indoors and outdoors, lift bags of soil or other gardening supplies, work both independently and with others, and interact with visitors if needed, take direction from BioPark staff.

- Deep interest in entomology, gardening, botany, husbandry, and horticulture.
