The applicant will be responsible for finding, documenting, and tracking all American oystercatcher nests and broods. The applicant will monitor a nesting seabird colony as well as a water bird rookery on LSSI. The technician will conduct Wilson’s plover breeding surveys, shorebird migration surveys, and will successfully re-sight banded birds. Daily monitoring activities include a strenuous bicycle ride (up to 18 miles/day) with field equipment to and along the beach. Field work is often conducted in harsh conditions that may include heat, biting insects, wind, rain, and soft sand. The Bird Technician will also participate in other management projects that will include sea turtle nest monitoring and marsh bird point count surveys. The successful applicant will occasionally give presentations for the guest program at LSSI and may also lead and/or assist with volunteer events on the island.The successful applicant will have a flexible schedule, working 40 hours per week with one full day off per week. Little St. Simons Island, Georgia, is an 11,000-acre private barrier island that is only accessible by boat. Access to the mainland is limited and is not guaranteed on the technician’s time off. This is a full-time, seasonal position that runs March 17- July 18 (flexible).
