Job Description:

A City Forestry Supervisor assesses, recommends plans, and supervises a program within the municipal Forestry Division, which may include the urban and park tree planting program or the urban and park tree maintenance and removal program. Work of this class involves supervising urban and park tree planting and/or maintenance and removal program and operations staff.

 

Incumbents receive general supervision from a technical superior.  Employees in this class work a conventional workweek that may involve weekend work.  Work is performed outdoors where there may be occasional exposure to difficult terrain, insects and plant irritants and in an office where working conditions are normal.  Work requires moderate physical exertion such as walking, bending and assisting in the planting or maintenance of trees.

Qualifications:

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of arboriculture.
  • Knowledge of tree planting and removal techniques and practices. 
  • Knowledge of tree diseases, insect pests and pollution effects on trees in an urban environment.
  • Knowledge of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers and safe utilization and application.
  • Knowledge of tree physiology, pathology, and species identification.
  • Knowledge of laws, ordinances, codes and regulations of City planning and zoning with regard to forestry.
  • Knowledge of public budgetary principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of grant funding requirements.
  • Ability to plan and monitor tree planting or maintenance and removal program or operations.
  • Ability to analyze statistics and recommend operational strategies.
  • Ability to write contract specifications.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with counterparts in the community, colleagues in the public and private sector, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain records and write reports.
  • Administrative ability.

 

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

EDUCATION: Have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in arboriculture, horticulture, or forestry.

 

EXPERIENCE: Have three years of experience in forestry programs for tree care, plant growth and tree disease and insect controls.

OR

NOTES EQUIVALENCIES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.    

            

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES

 

Certification as a Forester with the Society of American Foresters OR as an Arborist with the International Society of Arboriculture is required.

 

Tree Risk Assessment Qualification is desirable.

 

Registration as a Maryland Tree Expert or an equivalent registration is desirable.

 

A valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver’s license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver’s license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required.

This position is required to complete a Financial Disclosure pursuant to Sections 7-7, 7-8, and 7-9 of the City Ethics Law.

$70,509-$112,814
