Job Description:

The Climate -Smart Forestry Tower Project Manager is part of the multi-disciplinary team that will monitor carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas fluxes in novel, stand-scale Climate-Smart Forestry practices in South Carolina. Projects will focus on loblolly silviculture and longleaf pine restoration with a priority on reaching and serving underrepresented landowners. The Tower Project Manager will be responsible for managing the logistics and administration of a Climate-Smart Forestry monitoring project, including installation, maintenance, and operation of several eddy flux towers.

The position is based out of the Baruch Institute in coastal Georgetown, SC, but will involve travel to several field sites within South Carolina. The Project Manager will interact with landowners and work as part of an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate, graduate students, field technicians, postdoctoral scholars and faculty at Clemson University. This is a time limited position with four years of funding available.

 

JOB DUTIES:

25% - Essential - Sensor Systems: Oversees installation and maintenance of >$1M in eddy flux tower (120' tall triangular steel towers) infrastructure and environmental equipment and sensors, including managing contractors and interfacing with landowners. Supervises technicians and contractors to install, maintain, test, troubleshoot, calibrate and operate instruments, sensors, solar power systems and other field equipment.

 

25% - Essential - Administrative: Coordinates with tower installation contractors. Manages the purchasing and receiving of a significant amount of environmental sensors. Administers clerical duties including managing the travel logistics, reimbursements and purchasing of the Climate Smart Forestry team within the O'Halloran Lab.

 

25% - Essential - Project Management: Keeps project on schedule and maintains communication with Project Director and other members of the Climate Smart Commodities team. Reports progress regularly and identifies and troubleshoots problems.

 

25% - Essential - Supervision: Supervises the Climate-Smart Forestry Tower Technician and seasonal forestry technicians. Develops and trains staff on scientific and safety protocols.

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education - Master's Degree - Forestry, Natural Resources, Ecology, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related disciplines

Experience - 4 years of technical experience in scientific research in any environmental science or engineering field

 

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:

Experience - 8 years of technical experience in sensor-based environmental research, especially with towers. Relevant experience in forestry research, and technical experience with flux measurement equipment, tower maintenance, solar power systems and data loggers. Experience managing projects (e.g. construction) and interfacing with contractors.

 

Certification - Tower climbing training certificate or willingness to become certified is preferred

$57,600 - $60,000
