Job Description:

Community Forest Conservation Coordinator

The Nature Conservancy, Louisiana Business Unit seeks a Community Forest Conservation Coordinator for a 2.5-year position, ending May 2026. The Coordinator will oversee the Treesilience Program, a new program carried out in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry with a goal of improving and/or restoring tree canopy cover and building resilience in community green spaces of areas impacted (FEMA declared) by the 2020 and 2021 hurricanes in southwest and southeast Louisiana. This work will involve working with partners to utilize Treesilience funds on projects aimed at tree removal, tree pruning, and site prep and tree planting in small, medium, and large communities across south Louisiana, including key focal areas of New Orleans and Lake Charles and surrounding communities. Special priority will be placed on communities of underserved populations with sparse and/or heavily storm-damaged canopy. Although this position has a determined point of ending, TNC and the Coordinator may work together to find avenues and opportunities for continuation of the position in a similar or broader geographic area within Louisiana.

The Community Forest Conservation Coordinator fosters and maintains communications, conducts outreach, and coordinates with partners and potential applicants for Treesilience funds on public and community spaces. City and parish planners, urban forest- and community development-focused non-profits, and managers of parks, schools, museums, and other public and community spaces are all potential partners. The Coordinator evaluates technical and financial aspects of proposed projects and works with partners and contractors to oversee their implementation, adhering to city and parish codes, laws, and guidances. They will ensure projects align with Treesilience objectives, enhance native biodiversity and climate change resilience, are responsive to the expressed needs of communities and partners, and are carried out safely and with the support of communities and partners. Projects may range in size from a few hundred square feet to over 20 acres and involve multiple types of arboricultural, horticultural, and/or silvicultural methods. The Coordinator will also work with one or more communities and third-party experts to carry out a tree canopy assessment and/or Reforestation Plan. They may lead volunteers on project implementation and/or coordination. The Community Forest Conservation Coordinator will also occasionally assist TNC conservation staff on other forest, freshwater, and coastal projects. Some work will involve long periods outdoors in hot weather with moderate physical labor. This work will require regular travel, including occasional overnights.
