Job Description:

American Conservation Experience is providing opportunities for experiential learning through which members can explore our public lands and do meaningful work to conserve the environment while supporting local communities. Members of our crew program can expect to get a wide range of experiences while working alongside land management professionals and ACE staff. Members gain experience within camp-life, communal living, conflict resolution, outdoor competencies and more while completing projects ranging from building new trails, to removing invasive plants, planting native plants, historic preservation, and fencing for wildlife habitat and range management on public lands.

 

Member compensation and benefits include a package valued at $1,700/mo. This package includes housing, program meals, project transportation, and puts $240 a week in your pocket.

Upon successful completion of a full term, AmeriCorps Members receive a Segal Education Award of $3,447.50 (for 900 hours/26 weeks) or $1,824.07 (for 450 hours/13 weeks). This award can be used to pay education-related costs including tuition and payback of qualifying student loans. Individuals have 7 years to use the education award.

Comprehensive hands-on training that will prepare members to build a career in conservation. Training depends on the type of crew you join, but may include chainsaw, technical trail, herbicide, wilderness medical/first aid, Leave No Trace, outdoor leadership, backcountry skills and more, an average value of over $1,500.

Eligible student loans can be placed into forbearance while serving in AmeriCorps with ACE

Some Members are eligible for preferential hiring status following their term of service. Corps Members who serve a minimum of 640 total hours, with 120 of those hours on an eligible public land project, may qualify for Public Land Corps non-competitive hiring status when applying to future federal jobs. ACE operates on a nontraditional schedule, from 4-to-8 days on projects in the field and then providing members 3-to-6 days off between each project to explore new places. We encourage a culture of active exploration, and members regularly spend their off time visiting new parks and outdoor destinations to go backpacking, rock climbing, camping, and enjoy local culture.

Qualifications:

ACE is currently looking for enthusiastic young adults for crews across the country. Opportunities are currently available in California from state parks along the coast all the way into the High Sierras, to the high desert and forests of the Mountain West, the Southwest and its canyons and mountains, and throughout the Eastern US from the Smokies to the Atlantic Coast.

 

Applicants should be prepared to perform physically challenging labor on environmental and conservation projects for 10 hours a day. Applicants should expect to hike extended distances on rough terrain carrying backpacks, tools, and equipment, and be prepared to spend 8 consecutive days in the field, on each project. Members will work in a variety of weather conditions such as temperatures ranging from below freezing to over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, high winds, intense sunshine, rain, and snow.

 

Required:

 

U.S. Citizen or permanent resident

Able and willing to work in a group

Able and willing to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and capable of hiking moderate distances in somewhat rough terrain during inclement weather conditions

Willingness to undergo and must pass the required three-part criminal history check/federal criminal history check

ACE Members must verify that they are fully vaccinated for Covid-19 or have requested and been granted a medical or religious exemption to vaccination by the time they start their term

Preferred:

 

Experience in hiking and navigation in steep terrain

Strong desire to enter the conservation field as a natural resource professional

Experience or interest in volunteering in local communities

A willingness to be outside

Physical Demands, Work Environment and Working Conditions:

 

Physical Demands: Requires frequent sitting, standing, walking, hiking, carrying, using hands to handle or feel, reaching with hands and arms, talking and hearing. Manual dexterity required for use of various tools or equipment. Required to stoop, kneel, climb stairs, and/or crouch. Ability to hike over rough terrain, and camp overnight under field conditions.

Vision Requirements: Close, distance, peripheral and depth perception vision as well as the ability to focus may be required.

Weight Lifted or Force Exerted: Frequently moves up to 25 lbs., ability to move up to 60lbs.

Environmental: Outdoor and indoor conditions. Work environment conditions can change frequently; working under adverse weather conditions and in various climates.

Noise Environment: Moderate to high noise such gas-powered chainsaws and other hand and power tools.

Travel: This position requires domestic travel.

Salary:
$240/Week, AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of AmeriCorps term, housing and food provided, training by industry leading professionals provided
Benefits:

Members will receive a Living Allowance of $240/week, paid bi-weekly.

 

Members obtain an Education Award for the amount of $1,824.07 (for 13 weeks) or $3,447.50 (for 26 weeks) upon successful completion of service.

 

ACE provides members with food during all project days; members are responsible for providing their own food on off-days.

 

ACE provides members with free housing during their term of service. When working in or near the Mountain West region, members spend off days in our hostel-style housing in Hurricane, UT. When working remotely, members will be provided housing in those remote locations. The member will provide their own blankets/pillow/sleeping bag/towels.

 

AmeriCorps members may also be eligible for qualifying child care coverage and federal loan forbearance. Additional enrollment steps are required.
