Job Description:

The Conservation Forester/Forestry Technician manages and advances conservation programs, plans, and methods for small to medium scale geographic areas. The Conservation Forester/Forestry Technician (CF) provides technical leadership and support to the Alabama business unit and implements partnership plans on US Fish and Wildlife Refuges, preserve management programs, and stewardship. The Conservation Forester/Forestry Technician addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species, fosters cross-site learning among conservation community, and supplies conservation planning teams with site or landscape level information relevant to the planning and restoration process. The Conservation Forester/Forestry Technician implements conservation strategies in a partnership with US Fish and Wildlife Service and a variety of strategies to secure public and private support for TNC conservation priorities. The Conservation Forester/Forestry Technician coordinates multiple projects, sets deadlines and manages completion. Activities include timber sale prep and contractor management, invasive species inventory and control, prescribed fire, and detailed reporting to partners. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. This position will primarily work in Bibb and Calhoun counties, a central Alabama location is preferred. This position is currently operating under a two-year agreement between The Nature Conservancy and US Fish and Wildlife Service with the opportunity to extend provided desired outcomes and adequate funding. Compensation based on experience.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience managing staff or contractors.

Relationship building experience to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e., media, US Fish and Wildlife staff, internal scientists.

Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).

Experience with communication via written, spoken and graphical means in English.

Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.

Experience in training.

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

 

Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.

3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience managing forestry operations, i.e., harvest operations, site prep, planting, data collection.

Prescribed fire experience.

Experience with ArcGIS data collection and management.

Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.

Knowledge of ecological land management principles.

Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.

Physical fitness.

Miscellaneous:

Central Alabama location required.

Salary:
$45,000 - 60,000
