Description: 

The Conservation Planner is the lead staff member responsible for GALT’s documenting, mapping and creating reports for new properties scheduled to be permanently protected. Each year, GALT works with landowners to permanently protect a variety of properties, in a variety of ecosystems and watersheds.  These range from productive farms and working forests to important wildlife habitats, including wetlands.   As part of this process, GALT works with landowners to identify the various conservation purposes and management goals associated with each property.  The Conservation Planner will meet with landowners to document the current conditions, land management and other components of a property.  The candidate must have a basic background in forestry, wildlife and natural resource-type management. The candidate must be comfortable meeting landowners, walking and working in a forested area, including wilderness type areas and/or a farm, and navigating in the woods.   The candidate needs to know how to read legal descriptions, surveys and maps and create maps using the latest technologies/tools, such as Arc GIS.  The candidate appreciates and understands southeastern plants and animals, migratory birds, farming and forestry practices and options.  The candidate is an excellent communicator and time manager and adept at working under occasional intense deadlines.  This position requires much travel, including overnight travel, particularly in the 3rd and 4th quarters of the year.  Other duties include creating/updating maps and monitoring existing protected lands.

Location:

This staff member will work remotely in a home office setting in Georgia or Alabama, with occasional travel to GALT’s office and other locations for meetings with other staff. Most travel will be in Alabama and Georgia, with occasional travel in adjacent states.

General Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the fields of natural resource management, geography or related science (biology, environmental science, forestry, agronomy, ecology, etc.) or on the job equivalent.
  • Enjoys communicating and relating with others, including landowners and other staff members.
  • Enjoys being in the woods but is also comfortable working at the computer.
  • Enjoys traveling for work, including overnight stays, particularly in the 3rd and 4th quarters of the year.
  • Experience identifying and understanding ecosystems, watersheds, habitats, soil types, forest types, farming practices, plants and animals of the Southeast and a strong desire and exuberance to continue to increase skills in this area, including the ability to communicate these in map and report form.
  • Very skilled at time management, with the ability to work under seasonal time crunches, and adhere to deadlines and prioritize.
  • Knowledge of computer software, including mapping software, such as the Esri Suite of Geographical Information Systems software (GIS), and the ability to adapt to new technologies.
  • The ability to read legal descriptions, surveys and maps and create maps using the latest technologies/tools, such as Arc GIS.

Physical Demands:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.

This position requires the ability to hike and walk in rugged natural terrain, and to be comfortable working alone in a forest/farm/wilderness setting. Work includes carrying instruments and operating a vehicle/off road vehicle on a variety of natural terrains. The person must also be able to sit for periods of time driving and/or using a computer.
