Primary Role: This position will work closely with the National Park Service (NPS) Inventory and Monitoring Division (IMD), which conducts baseline inventories and long-term monitoring to help inform park management decisions. While decades of data have been collected by IMD throughout the NPS, the full value of these data can only be realized when they are easily accessible and actionable for field managers, planners, and decision makers. The objectives of this position are to improve access to IMD data, primarily for Midwest Region parks, through developing user-friendly, accessible platforms and tailored analyses. Deliverables include trend analyses, automated reports, and data visualization dashboards that improve accessibility, data quality, interpretation, integration, and application of IMD datasets, and that are in support of conservation science, resource management, and public communication. Deliverables will be accessible to NPS managers, along with park stakeholders and the public, where feasible. The ideal candidate will be a collaborative professional with strong communication skills and the ability to work independently. Please note that employment is contingent upon a federal background check and favorable adjudication. We aim to have this role filled by February 2026.

  • Develops user-friendly R packages and/or automated R Markdown or Quarto reports for specific monitoring protocols that help an intermediate-level R user (e.g., protocol lead) efficiently compile, query, QA/QC, and summarize IMD data.
  • Designs data visualization dashboards that are 508 compliant and allow non-technical users to access, download, and explore IMD data.
  • Troubleshoots and/or updates MS Access databases used for data entry and storage by IMD monitoring protocols.
  • Provides training to IMD staff and partners and writes up documentation on how to use and update the analytical tools developed by the position.
  • Minimum of a B.S. in relevant fields, such as ecology, biology, statistics, or computer science. Completion of M.S. and/or PhD in relevant fields is ideal.
  • Experience working with large complex ecological datasets, such as experience using mixed modelling and non-linear approaches to analyze long-term datasets. Experience working in a Bayesian framework is helpful but not required.
  • Advanced programming skills in R, with experience in additional programming languages like SQL, HTML/CSS, and/or JavaScript ideal.
    • Skills include experience with functional programming and iteration, building R packages, developing automated reports in R Markdown or Quarto, and/or developing R shiny apps.
    • Experience using Git and GitHub or similar platforms for code sharing and version control is ideal.
    • Experience with data wrangling, such as reshaping and joining data tables, and Quality Assurance/Quality Control data checking.
  • Experience working with relational databases, especially Microsoft Access.
  • Experience with project management, including setting project goals and deadlines, tracking progress, coordinating meetings with partners, and seeking additional funding.
