Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Reports To:  NDA’s Chief Conservation Officer in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources State Deer Biologist

Position Term:  This is a full-time position offered through a Richard King Mellon Foundation grant and partnership between the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and the National Deer Association (NDA).  The position is currently funded for 18 months with the anticipation of continuing funding dictated by the success of the project. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION: 

NDA is seeking a qualified, self-motivated, and outgoing individual to serve as a DMAP Biologist to:

  • Provide personalized, science-based guidance to private landowners and hunting clubs, helping them implement habitat improvements, monitor herd health, encourage increased antlerless harvest, and adopt CWD mitigation strategies.
  • Provide one-on-one technical assistance to private landowners, hunting clubs, and forestry stakeholders to implement habitat improvements, herd monitoring, increased antlerless deer harvest, and CWD risk reduction strategies.
  • Coordinate voluntary CWD sampling by engaging hunters, collecting biological data from harvested deer, and supporting landowner enrollment in DMAP.
  • Educate landowners and assist Georgia DNR staff with facilitation of DMAP, focused on the CWD area in Georgia.
  • Provide harvest recommendations, management plans, and habitat management recommendations on lands enrolled in the DMAP program.
  • Solicit enrollment, provide regional updates, maintain all applicable databases, and serve as the primary point of contact for the DMAP program in assigned area.
  • Conduct habitat management trainings for private landowners, understand federal and state private lands financial assistance programs, and help coordinate private land assistance programs with DNR staff to help hunting clubs implement habitat improvement projects.
  • Promote hunter recruitment (R3) and mentoring initiatives from both NDA and DNR.
  • Participate in projects to promote wildlife conservation, conservation education and Georgia’s hunting heritage.
  • Increase awareness of NDA by recruiting new members and sponsors.
  • Promote NDA programs and conservation partner programs.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Maintain close working relationships with the DNR’s Deer Team, Game Management regions, and Private Lands Program.      Provide monthly and annual updates on current activities and attend regional staff meetings whenever possible.
  • Coordinate and assist with CWD sampling trainings for landowners and deer hunters in Georgia while also participating in various DNR CWD sampling efforts.
  • Maintain close working relationship with other state and national NDA employees.
  • Perform routine administrative duties required to comply with DNR programs, divisions, and agency standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned. 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in wildlife management or related natural resource field.
  • Experience with deer hunting, deer management, and habitat management.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrate sound working knowledge of common agricultural practices.
  • Ability to engage and relate with hunters, landowners and land managers.
  • Ability to organize and coordinate educational events.
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and teamwork skills.
  • Well-developed written and verbal communications skills.
  • Sound computer skills including knowledge of Microsoft Office programs. Experience with GPS, and GIS programs including ArcGIS Pro is helpful.
  • Willingness to travel and work outside normal business hours.
  • Ability to produce self-motivated work with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to plan and organize assigned tasks independently.
  • Ability to conduct scientific wildlife surveys.

Flexible Work Schedule:  This position includes a fair number of work hours that fall outside of standard working hours (Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm). However, we wish all our employees to maintain an appropriate work-life balance.  To do so, we ask that you take time off during the standard working hours to account for hours worked during nights and weekends.

Location Detail:
Position Location: This is a home-based position that will work with private landowners in Georgia’s chronic wasting disease (CWD) management area. This position will be required to report to Georgia DNR offices and other sites for meetings, workshops, trainings, etc. Preference will be given to candidates willing to reside in south central Georgia (Lanier, Berrien, or adjacent county).
Salary:
$50,000-$55,000 annually, depending on experience level.
