Deadline: Mon, 04/18/2022 - 12:00pm Employer: Bartlett Tree Experts Job Field: Forestry Other Job Type: Seasonal, Temporary, Internship Location: North Carolina Job Description: We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join the Diagnostic Lab (within the Bartlett Tree Research Laboratory in Charlotte, NC) for three to six months (May-October 2022)! Six-month availability is preferred. The Diagnostic Lab services all Bartlett offices in North America, evaluating over 11,000 plant samples each year. The Diagnostic Lab is also a member of the National Plant Diagnostic Network of state and federal diagnostic labs and is a major contributor of diagnoses to the National Data Repository. DIAGNOSTIC LAB RESPONSIBILITIES: Learns, understands, and adheres to all lab safety protocols and company safety policies Opens, sorts, and logs in samples received by mail daily Assists with washing and visual analysis of root samples Prepares various plant tissue samples for ELISA, DNA extraction, and PCR testing Makes and pours various types of culture media Autoclaves plant and culture waste materials Washes dishes and performs other lab cleaning tasks Provides a weekly report of activities to technicians and lab manager Intern I Duties: The intern will assist with unpacking and checking in samples, processing samples for testing (serological and molecular), and general lab tasks like cleaning and media-making. A strong understanding of scientific principles and lab techniques is required. The successful candidate will learn about arboriculture, ornamental plant problem diagnosis, the use of various diagnostic testing methods, working within a team, and much more. Intern II Duties: The intern will primarily assist with sample examination, diagnosis, and report-writing. Additional tasks will include unpacking and checking in samples and processing samples for serological and molecular batch testing. A strong understanding of scientific principles, lab techniques, and the diagnostic process is required. The successful candidate will learn about arboriculture, ornamental plant problem diagnosis, the use of various diagnostic testing methods, working within a multidisciplinary team, and much more.
