Overview:  Pheasants Forever  and  Quail Forever  make up the  nation's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to upland habitat conservation. This community of more than 480,000 members, supporters and partners is dedicated to the protection of our uplands through habitat improvement, public access, education and advocacy. A network of 754 local chapters spread across North America determine how 100 percent of their locally raised funds are spent — the only national conservation organization that operates through this grassroots structure. Since its creation in 1982, the organization has dedicated more than $1 billion to 580,000 habitat projects benefiting 28.8 million acres.

Pheasants Forever & Quail Forever’s South Region is comprised of just over 100 employees (9 State Coordinators) across the states of Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.  Our goal in the South Region is to restore bobwhite quail populations throughout their historic range by implementing the organizations four strategic priorities:  increasing and improving wildlife habitat on public and private lands, advancing conservation policies and program funding, expanding public access to upland wildlife habitat, and expanding, educating and engaging the upland conservation community. We are seeking a qualified individual to lead and support the state leadership and provide strategic direction for the mission delivery in the South Region.

Responsibilities:
This person will be responsible for the oversight of Conservation Operations throughout the region in the states listed above.  Emphasis will be placed on team building, cross-functional collaboration, and the delivery of the national strategic plan.  Specific responsibilities include:

  • Lead the region to successful achievement of the organization's four strategic priorities.
  • Provide support and oversight of state leadership in goal setting, performance reviews, compensation adjustment, hiring, and promoting and termination decisions.
  • Support state leadership in work plan/goal development that aligns with the organization’s strategic plan in addition to supporting development of training for regional team.
  • Work collaboratively with the Conservation Operations Programs team and Government Affairs Team to ensure all four strategic priorities are represented in state strategic plans.
  • Occasional direct advocacy with federal and state policymakers in support of our mission.
  • Foster and maintain excellent relationships with all state and federal agency partners in the region to ensure programs and delivery are adequately funded.
  • Collaborate with the conservation data team to compile monthly activity reports and other performance records as required by funding sources.
  • Plan and lead conservation operations leadership meeting and South region leadership meeting.
  • In partnership with Human Resources, create talent and succession plans for regional leadership.   
  • Work closely with the Development Team to raise money and ensure that chapter dollars, major gifts, planned giving, and grant development initiatives are achieved.
  • This position travels 60-80 days annually.      

Qualifications: Minimum qualifications for this position include:

  • A passion for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever’s mission, as well as knowledge and appreciation of conservation, hunting, and the outdoors.
  • Strategic thinker with an innovative mindset and strengths in efficiency, timeliness, multi-tasking, teamwork, and attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral, public speaking, and written communication.
  • Ability to build, support, and coach large teams.
  • Experience in budgeting, strategic planning, and executing strategic plans.
  • Developing and stewarding partnerships with federal, state, and local governments to ensure programs and delivery are adequately funded.
  • 5 years of experience in the supervision of multiple employees and managing managers.
  • B.S. in business, communications, natural resources, or related field.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex budgets, multiple ongoing projects, and tight deadlines, and to maintain a high level of initiative, collaboration, and attention to detail in a remote work environment.
  • Lives in one of the states listed above.
