Job Description:

Forest Stewards, a non-profit, Associated Entity of Western Carolina University is seeking a Director of Stewardship and Forestry Education. Forest Stewards was created in 2008 with the dual mission of promoting sustainable forest management and educating the next generation of natural resource professionals. We are active in the design, implementation, and assessment of forest management treatments on family, public, and tribal lands. The Director of Stewardship and Forestry Education would lead these and other initiatives.

 

Primary responsibilities:

• Oversee forest management activities including meeting with current and potential clients, conducting and summarizing forest resource assessments, writing management plans, and overseeing implementation of management treatments.

• Provide educational opportunities for Western Carolina University students, including directing paid internships and developing experiential learning opportunities.

• Assist with project management including project scheduling, budgeting, and database management.

 

 

Qualifications:

• MS degree in Forestry, Natural Resource Management, or a related discipline.

• Registered Forester in North Carolina (or able to become a Registered Forester within 1 year).

• Understanding of southern Appalachian forest systems and their management.

• Experience in the design, implementation, and assessment of forest management treatments.

• Desire to mentor university students.

Salary:
$50,000 to $56,000
Benefits:

Full benefits under the North Carolina State Health Plan and Teachers and State Employees Retirement System or UNC Optional Retirement Plan.
