Job Purpose

Direct LP’s ESG Strategy efforts toward sustainability goals. Lead Public policy efforts including engagement with Indigenous peoples. Manage multiple functional centers of excellence groups including public policy, ESG, forest certification, product lifecycle assessment, and sustainability communications.

In this position you will have the opportunity to:

  • Position LP from a policy and sustainability standpoint as a top performer in the specialty building products industry.
  • Responsible to maintain internal steering committee on ESG initiatives and ensure Executive ESG Council are fully informed of progress.
  • Lead key environmental ESG initiatives focused on creating value for LP and for key stakeholders such as energy use, resource conservation, recycling, carbon & pollution reduction, waste elimination, transportation, education, and more sustainable products.
  • Evaluate and approve proposals for sustainability projects, considering factors such as cost effectiveness, technical feasibility, and integration with other initiatives.
  • Measure and monitor progress against key ESG strategies, objectives, and performance targets.
  • Lead and support the development of LP’s Annual Sustainability Report
  • Respond to federal, state, and local government /regulator request for ESG related data and/or participate as requested in policy setting panels representing the Company’s interest.
  • Stay informed on evolving ESG trends, policies and requirements to ensure LP continues to address key ESG topics material to business operations and overall strategy.
  • Oversee and lead the effective implementation and ongoing maintenance of our domestic and international forest certification program as a key component of our ESG program supporting customer product assurances and responsibility claims.
  • Provide Sales and Marketing support as it relates to customer sustainability information requests, and/or specific sustainability information as it relates to our responsible wood sourcing program.
  • Develop, or oversee the development of, marketing and communications as it relates to LP products, sustainability initiatives, campaigns, or events.
  • Participate on key association, ESG and forest certification committees to ensure LP’s position and interests are being represented effectively.
  • Oversee Indigenous Relations Program and the lead the negotiation of agreements between the company and Indigenous groups, as required.
  • Lead internal teams to develop Indigenous relations strategies, including the identification of potential business opportunities with Indigenous groups.
  • Connect and build relationships with leaders of Indigenous communities, particularly where LP has existing partnership agreements in place.
  • Collaborate with DEI company leaders to further support and enhance diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across operations in Canada and the US.
  • Assemble & lead Public Policy Issue Management Teams as needed to ensure strategic relations (including those with key politicians, associations, research groups and outside contract lobby firms) are established and that key understandings of urgent public policy issues and opportunities are learned.
  • Design, develop, and commission policy research with internal functions (e.g., forestry, logistics, sales and marketing) and external vendors (e.g., consultants, academic groups, etc.) and other organizations as needed to help establish corporate positions.
  • Define clear LP positions and achievable goals for the public policy initiatives in which we participate.
  • Lead the development and coordinate public policy initiatives in collaboration with other LP business teams and functional areas. Lead, manage and coach a team of emerging sustainability leaders to support strategic business objectives as it relates to sustainability, public policy, and indigenous engagement.
Qualifications:

Additional Leadership Requirements

  • Responsible for leading and implementing ESG strategy to ensure the effective management of environmental and social risks and opportunities to create long-term value for shareholders and key stakeholders.
  • Responsible for leading LP’s Sustainable Forestry Certification and Label-use Programs, assuring the corporation maintains credible forest management and timber procurement systems at all U.S. and foreign locations, and has oversight of LP’s independent third-party forestry certifications in North America.
  • Responsible for leading LP’s Public Policy efforts, including the tracking of emerging issues, leading meeting agendas and discussions, assembly of issue management teams, directing internal research projects, commissioning external research, and using issue management protocols to advance LP public policy and business objectives. Also leads LP’s Indigenous Relations Program across North America.

What do I need to be successful?

  • 10 years of Forestry, Sustainability, Public Policy and Operational experience in North and South America
  • Project management, communications, negotiations and relationship-building skillset is a key asset to this position

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Master's degree in Sustainability or Business Administration a plus
