Deadline: Fri, 05/24/2024 - 12:00pm Employer: North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission Job Field: Fisheries Job Type: Full Time Location: North Carolina Location Detail: Mebane Job Description: The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission is seeking applicants for a District 5 Fisheries Biologist I for the Inland Fisheries Division. The District 5 Fisheries Biologist I conducts biological surveys, fisheries research, and habitat enhancement activities; identifies public fishing access needs; provides technical assistance and informational services to government agencies, universities, and individuals; responds to emergency situations (fish kills); and completes special assignments as directed by regional and Division staff. The position serves as a liaison between the Commission and the general public, private organizations, and other public agencies. Most activities are conducted in the 11 North Carolina counties of Commission District 5. Some projects may involve the supervision of one or more conservation technicians or temporary employees. This position is located at the Commission’s Sykes Depot located in Alamance County, NC. A Monday-Friday schedule is associated with this position which involves working 40 hours per week (specific times set by the manager). Evening and weekend work may be required on occasion. Work week may exceed 40 hours during certain times of the year. This position also requires frequent in-state and out-of-state travel with occasional overnight stays. Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in wildlife or fisheries management, fisheries science, zoology, or a biological science, or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of experience in wildlife or fisheries management; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. Qualified applicants must document on the application that they possess all of the following: • Documented knowledge of freshwater fisheries, fisheries management principles, and techniques used in sampling aquatic resources and their habitats. • Documented knowledge of ecological principles and habitat conservation practices. • Documented experience designing, conducting, and analyzing fisheries surveys; interpreting field investigations; and preparing technical reports. • Documented experience operating and maintaining of the field and laboratory equipment used in fisheries science. Management Preferences: • Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to interact effectively with resources professionals and the public. • Ability to function independently for work planning, scheduling, procurement, and personnel management. Special Qualifications/Requirements: • Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license is required within 90 days of hire. Candidate must present proof of a valid NC Driver’s License and proof of an acceptable driving record.
