Dr. Jesse Abrams at the University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources and Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is seeking a prospective doctoral student in Integrative Conservation with an Area of Emphasis in Forestry and Natural Resources. The student will be supported by a National Science Foundation grant funding research on the socio-environmental past and future of timberlands in northern Maine. The start date will be in spring, summer, or fall of 2023.

 

The doctoral student will receive training in integrative conservation and research and will work closely with partners at the University of Maine and Harvard Forest as well as with key stakeholders in forest industry and both tribal and non-tribal communities of place. Academic training will take place in Athens, Georgia with extensive travel to New England for fieldwork, meetings, and conferences. The school has 23,000 acres of forestland across the state for teaching, outreach and research.

 

The Savannah River Ecology Laboratory is a research unit of the University of Georgia located on the 300 square mile Savannah River Site, a Department of Energy facility near Aiken, SC. With a staff of over 140 faculty members, postdocs, research professionals, technicians, and graduate students, the laboratory pursues basic and applied research at multiple levels of ecological organization, from atoms to ecosystems. SREL also provides opportunities for graduate and undergraduate research, training, and service to the community through environmental outreach. Throughout its 65+ year history, SREL has strived to acquire and communicate knowledge that contributes to sound ecological stewardship.

Qualifications:

Master's degree in a relevant field such as Forestry, Political Science, Anthropology, Sociology, etc.

 

Salary:
$24,000 (.40 FTE)
