Job Description:

Ecology/ Environmental Intern

The Atlanta HNTB Office is looking for an Ecology/ Environmental Planning Summer Intern for 2025! As an Ecology/ Environmental Planning Intern, you will assist the Ecology department on transportation and infrastructure projects from clients such as GDOT, MARTA, etc. At HNTB, we mainly work on state or federally funded infrastructure projects for clients which require identification, documentation, and avoidance/ minimization of impacts to federally or state protected environmental resources (I.e. protected species, Waters of the US, trout streams, critical habitat). 

Our work is focused on ensuring compliance with federal laws such as the Endangered Species Act, National Environmental Policy Act, and the Clean Water Act and accurate representation of environmental resources within a project’s footprint.

Qualifications:

Requirements: 

  • Enrolled in a related undergraduate or graduate program in Ecology, Biology, Forestry, Wildlife Sciences, Fisheries Sciences, Water and Soil Sciences, Anthropology, Environmental Science, Historic Preservation, Urban Planning, Environmental Planning, or a related field. 
  • Experience collecting environmental data (i.e., academic or work-related) that requires collaboration with others, the analysis of data/results, and compiling information into written format. 
  • Experience in composing and preparing written information/materials, including technical reports that communicate facts, ideas, and messages in a succinct and organized manner and is appropriate for the intended audience. 
  • Must be able to manage working on multiple projects at a time, keep an organized schedule, and turn in deliverables on time. 
  • Commitment toward high quality work and a high standard of ethical conduct. 
  • Must be able to work and communicate efficiently and effectively in a group. 
  • Must be able to traverse irregular, steep, or uneven terrain during fieldwork. 
  • Must be able to work outdoors during the summer in Georgia. 
  • Occasional overnight statewide travel and/ or additional hours for fieldwork may be needed.

Preferred/ Bonus Qualifications:

  • Experience in one or more natural history disciplines is a plus (i.e. Ornithology, Anthropology, Botany, Dendrology, Herpetology, Mammalogy, Ichthyology, etc.)
  • Experience with state and federal laws related to ecological resources, specifically the Endangered Species Act, the Clean Water Act, the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation & Management Act, the Fish and Wildlife Coordination Act, the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, the Georgia Wildflower Preservation Act, and the Georgia Endangered Wildlife Act.
  • Experience with environmental policy such as the Georgia Environmental Policy Act (GEPA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Georgia Erosion and Sedimentation Act and other applicable laws and regulations.
  • Experience using ArcMap, ArcGIS Pro, or another GIS software system.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, Teams) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • Experience performing fieldwork tasks such as delineating wetlands, surveying for plant/ herp/ animal species, or conducting aquatic species surveys.
  • Experience using a Munsell soil color chart.
