Ecology Field Technicians will work on multiple projects focused on intertidal research, biodiversity monitoring, and engaging citizen scientists in research and monitoring (and the overlap of them all). Technicians are responsible for field data recording and sample collection, handling, and processing, as well as assisting with Schoodic Institute programs and partner projects. Once trained, the Technicians will lead their peers and volunteers, including Earthwatch groups, through data collection in a diversity of environments from rocky shorelines and mudflats to forests, wetlands, and mountain summits. These positions are for early career professionals just entering the workforce who want to work across multiple ecosystems, with diverse wildlife, and use varied field skills for data collection and management. Qualified applicants enthusiastically embrace working in challenging outdoor conditions, learning on the go, working in small teams, and efficiently collecting and recording field data. All technicians will work together as well as with other Schoodic or National Park Service fellows, interns, and/or other technicians. These are entry-level positions with appropriate training provided for all primary responsibilities. The positions are full-time (40 hours/week) seasonal positions. Daily and weekly work schedules may fluctuate. Work days can be up to 16 hours long, but longer days will be compensated by shorter work days later in the week. In some instances, such as intertidal work during low tide, work days may be split into morning and evening work. At times work will begin at dawn and go through dusk. Work hours will include some weekends.

Qualifications:

● Field assignments to include:

○ Following established, standardized field procedures

○ Collecting data about bird, plant, insect, and intertidal organism diversity, abundance, and behavior

○ Perform restoration activities, including identifying native and invasive species ○ Use citizen science data collection mobile applications (iNaturalist, eBird, etc.)

○ Establish plots by siting locations with a GPS navigation system

● Train and lead groups of all ages in safe and scientifically rigorous field data collection, 1

● Communicate Schoodic Institute’s science through online content and public presentations,

● Follow safety and field operations policy and procedures,

● Ability to work alongside peers with minimal supervision in the field,

● Operate and maintain monitoring equipment,

● Work in a variety of conditions (e.g., weather, terrain, diverse (potentially buggy) habitats),

● Carry, move, and lift supplies (pack weighing up to 40 lbs.) to field sites (through, over, and in remote and uneven terrain),

● Other duties for Schoodic Institute may be assigned.

with housing provided on the Schoodic Institute campus in the Schoodic District of Acadia National Park.

Salary:
$17.50/hour
