Education Assistant - Discovery Center

 

Job Summary:

 

This position is responsible for providing guest support and enhancing the guest experience to those visiting the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center in a variety of ways. This candidate will be responsible for informal interpretations of current and future educational exhibits inside and outside the Discovery Center. These interpretations will maintain a strong focus on the conservation of native flora and fauna while utilizing a variety of artifacts, biofacts, and live ambassadors on exhibit, namely invertebrates. Daily, standard husbandry of education ambassadors will also be required. This position will also support guest engagement by participating in special events held in and around the Discovery Center.

 

Administrative responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the answering of phone calls and emails, the selling of memberships, the restocking of educational materials, and providing information to guests regarding Gardens activities.

 

Qualification Summary

 

 

Education & Experience:

 

Background in environmental education, ecology, and/or natural history or other similar field preferred

The successful applicant will work well in teams and with diverse constituencies, be self-motivated, work well under pressure and be able to handle several projects at one time

Refined and well-organized multi-tasking skills

Proficient use of Microsoft Word, Access, Excel and desktop publishing programs

Excellent interpersonal communication skills; excellent oral communication and ability to participate in public speaking events

Excellent written communication, research, and organizational skills

Applicant will have good judgment and, ideally, a sense of humor.

Must have a valid GA driver's license

Physical Requirements

Ability to stand and walk for extended periods of time

Ability to navigate stairways and corridors

Ability to lift 25 pounds

Critical Thinking Skills:

 

Be able to positively motivate and lead a team, conveying information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member.

Be able to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately

Be able to work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests.

Be able to identify potential guest issues and then develop methodologies to prevent or limit the impact of those guest issues during the course of guest visits.

Be able to assimilate complex information and data for various sources and consider, adjust or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need.

Be able to effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns and issues raised by team members and guests.

Be able to work with and understand financial information and data, and perform basic math functions.

 

 

Duties and Functions

 

Interact with all guests and all team members, at all times, in a friendly, service-oriented manner.

Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Callaway standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Gardens' business levels.

Assist with program promotion

Provide public presentations and demonstrations as needed

Convey educational information and ideas clearly

Evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately

Assists in the maintenance of animal displays and behind-the-scenes housing areas

Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming to include wearing a nametag when working.

Comply at all times with Callaway standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations.

Maintain a friendly and warm demeanor at all times with both team members and guests.

Attend necessary workshops, events and training seminars

Communicate policy and information to program staff

Reliably works a schedule to include weekends and holidays

Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management.

Attend all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager.
