The Education Internship is an 11-week summer program designed to provide a well-rounded experience for students interested in a career in horticulture, wildlife science, horticulture, entomology or similar. The Intern is responsible for assisting with and/or conducting all summer educational programs and leading specified programs either with a fellow intern, full-time staff or alone after proper training. College degree being pursued in public horticulture, environmental education, biological science, landscape design or related field. Experience in another internship or summer camp preferred. Experience interacting with children a plus. Must have a valid driver's license. Variable hours with some evenings required. Able to lead tours/hikes over rough terrain, lift 40 to 50 pounds of force occasionally and able to carry, push, pull or other wise move objects occasionally. Ability to project voice to be heard in large groups. Ability to stand for long hours at a time. Ability to positively motivate and lead a team, conveying information and ideas clearly and effectively so that ownership of high levels of guest service is understood to be the role of each individual team member. Ability to evaluate and select among alternative courses of action quickly and accurately Ability to work well in high-pressure situations while maintaining composure and objectivity, including the ability to listen carefully to and resolve guest issues to the satisfaction of the affected guests. Ability to identify potential guest issues and then develop methodologies to prevent or limit the impact of those guest issues during the course of guest visits. Ability to assimilate complex information and data for various sources and consider, adjust or modify to meet the constraints of the particular need. Ability to effectively listen to, understand, and clarify concerns and issues raised by team members and guests. Ability to work with and understand financial information and data, and perform basic math functions. Ability to effectively communicate with adult and children on a one-on-one basis as well as in a group setting, in classrooms as well as in informal learning situations. Ability to read a map and give directions to guests. Qualifications: Selected candidate will: Interact with all guests and all team members, at all times, in a friendly, service-oriented manner. Maintain regular attendance in compliance with Callaway standards, as required by scheduling that will vary according to the needs of Callaway Gardens' business levels. Maintain high standards of personal appearance and grooming to include wearing a nametag when working. Comply at all times with Callaway standards and regulations to encourage safe and efficient operations. Maintain a friendly and warm demeanor at all times with both team members and guests. Assist and conduct educational programs in home horticulture and natural history for adults and families. Conduct children's programs dealing with natural history and gardening, including art projects. Answer gardening and natural history questions in person, over the telephone and through correspondence. Assist in leading hikes through the Preserve at Callaway Gardens. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor or management. Attend all meetings/training as required by supervisor or manager.
