Job Description:

An Environmental Scientist 1 (ES1) performs field surveys and documentation to assist our environmental scientist team to identify existing natural environmental conditions surrounding transportation projects and help assess the potential impacts of proposed improvements. An ES1 performs field surveys, analyzes field data, and documents conditions under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist or Chief Environmental Scientist. ES1 tasks include wetland jurisdictional delineations, permitting, land-use and vegetative cover mapping, ecological assessments, protected species surveys (gopher tortoise, wading birds, Florida scrub-jay, Audubon’s crested caracara, bats, Florida grasshopper sparrow, shorebirds, etc.), submerged aquatic vegetation and coral surveys, botanical surveys, gopher tortoise relocations and report preparation to support environmental permitting and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance.

Qualifications:

Education: A candidate must have at a minimum a 4-year biology or natural science-related degree.

Experience: Previous experience is not required, however, two to five years of environmental permitting experience in Florida is preferred. Additionally, experience performing wetland jurisdictional delineations, snorkeling and/or SCUBA diving, working with the Florida Department of Transportation, being an authorized/qualified gopher tortoise agent, being a qualified crested caracara observer, possessing strong writing skills, having familiarity with listed and protected species of Florida flora and fauna, and having working knowledge of GIS software are highly valued.

 

Other: A candidate must be physically able to swim in open water and perform field work in rugged conditions while carry technical gear. Overnight travel, a flexible work schedule, and a valid driver’s license. are also required.
