Job Description:

An Environmental Scientist (ES) Intern performs field surveys and documentation to assist our environmental scientist team to identify existing natural environmental conditions surrounding transportation projects and help assess the potential impacts of proposed improvements. An ES Intern performs field surveys, analyzes field data, and documents conditions under the supervision of a Senior Environmental Scientist or Chief Environmental Scientist. ES Intern tasks include supporting wetland jurisdictional delineations, permitting, land-use and vegetative cover mapping, ecological assessments, protected species surveys (gopher tortoise, wading birds, Florida scrub-jay, Audubon’s crested caracara, bats, Florida grasshopper sparrow, shorebirds, etc.), submerged aquatic vegetation and coral surveys, botanical surveys, gopher tortoise relocations and assisting with report preparation for environmental permitting and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance.

 

Qualifications:

Education: A candidate must be working towards a 4-year biology or natural science-related degree.

Experience: Previous experience is not required. Familiarity with performing wetland jurisdictional delineations, listed and protected species of Florida flora and fauna, snorkeling and/or SCUBA diving, and GIS software are highly valued. Strong writing skills are necessary.

Other: A candidate must be physically able to swim in open water and perform field work in rugged conditions while carrying technical gear. Some overnight travel, a flexible work schedule, and a valid driver’s license are needed.
