Job Description:

JOB DUTIES:

Administration and coordination of the State Forest GIS geodatabase which includes the timber management data model and other highly technical specialized forest management computer programs.  This includes the utilization of growth and yield software and other data modeling software to provide the Florida Forest Service with timber harvest projections and appropriate scheduling of other timber stand management activities.

 

Assists the various field units with timber stand inventory technical guidance and oversight to ensure that the timber stand inventory data is collected accurately, correctly, and updated annually per the outlined standards in the Florida Forest Service State Forest Handbook. Works with field personnel to support the Forest Inventory and Sustainability System (FISS) for forest inventory, timber sales and reforestation projects. Provides technical assistance to the FISS contract manager and contractor.

 

Conducts field visits to state forests annually to review forest inventory data collection activities, conduct individual cruiser check plots, and provide technical direction as needed. Technical direction includes training and support of cruisers and check cruisers.

 

Provides support for wildfires and other natural disasters as directed. 

 

Performs related duties as required.

 

Qualifications:

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college and six (6) months of experience in environmental protection, regulation, or health; one of the physical or natural sciences; or engineering; or

 

One and a half (1.5) years of experience as an Environmental Specialist I or higher with the State of Florida; or

Two (2) years of experience as described above.

 

Requires possession of a valid driver license.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

Occasional to moderate travel required.

 

Position may respond to emergencies, including natural disasters or other type incidents requiring travel, as needed.
