Job Description:

The NC Division of Marine Fisheries is responsible for the stewardship of the state’s marine and estuarine resources. We are looking for a qualified individual interested in fulfilling our mission to work as a Field Interviewer to conduct our Access-Point Angler Intercept Survey. The survey targets marine recreational anglers to collect fishing effort, catch and participation data. Our goal is to ensure quality data are collected through this survey for making future fisheries management decisions. You will work as part of a regional team conducting angler surveys in Currituck, Dare, and Hyde Counties to help fulfill this goal. Qualified individuals should be skilled in fish identification, handling fish to measure and weigh them, be self-motivated, able to work independently with little direct supervision, and have good communication and customer service skills to interact with the fishing public. Some surveys are conducted aboard head boats, on weekends, and during evening hours. This is a home-based 11-month reoccurring temporary position.

Working knowledge of the principles and practices of the environmental field to which assigned.

Working knowledge of the state and/or federal rules and regulations pertaining to the area of assignment.

Working knowledge of the tools, equipment, procedures and methods necessary to carry out assigned functions.

Ability to prepare written reports.

Ability to effectively communicate in written and oral form.

Ability to handle with tact and consistency the diversity of public contacts demanded by work.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Some state job postings say you can qualify by an “equivalent combination of education and experience.” If that language appears below, then you may qualify through EITHER years of education OR years of directly related experience, OR a combination of both. Associate degree in one of the agricultural, biological, engineering, environmental or natural resource sciences or a closely related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Miscellaneous:

Note: Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position in order to work in a temporary position. All temporaries are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time.

 

Individuals hired in a temporary State job must be fully qualified for the job. Exposure to an agency's culture, process, procedures, and potential learning opportunities can provide valuable experience to those who may seek permanent employment with the state.

 

This temporary position is located in Manteo - Dare County.

Salary:
$16.00/hour

This is a temporary position and there are no leave or retirement benefits offered with this position. Temporary employees who work an annual average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP).
