Job Description:

 The successful candidate will use quantitative methods to evaluate issues associated with financial and risk management decisions of forest managers, forest businesses, and institutional investors, and provide them with research-based analysis and information.

 The candidate’s research may include financial returns and risks of forest and forestland investment, forestland as an asset class in portfolio management, forest products market and trade analysis, and/or financial effects of forest-related policy on forest management decisions. Additionally, the successful candidate is expected to identify research needs and advance knowledge in forest finance as forest or environmental product markets develop.

 The candidate will teach graduate courses including: 1) Timberland Accounting, Finance, and Taxation, and 2) Forest Finance Decisions. Advising of undergraduate students and establishing and supporting an active graduate research program in forest finance are also expected. Collaboration with faculty in the Harley Langdale Jr. Center for Forest Business and leadership in the Master of Forest Resources (MFR) degree in Forest Business program is expected.

 The candidate will secure external funding for research, successfully mentor graduate students, and publish research results in peer-reviewed journals. Active professional service relates to scientific societies, the peer review process, and service on Warnell and UGA committees.

Qualifications:

Required:

 Ph.D. in forest economics (prior to appointment), or a related field with a focus on financial decision making relevant to the forest industry and timberland investors (ABD applications accepted). Preferred:

 Evidence of and demonstrated strengths in oral and written communication.

 A strong analytical background and quantitative skills to support management decision-making in forest finance.

 Demonstrated multidisciplinary collaborative work, with expectations for similar continued efforts with faculty in Warnell and across the University.

 Evidence of a commitment to teaching excellence.

 Evidence of success in research design, grant development, presentation of results at scientific meetings and publication of results in leading peer-reviewed journals.

 Preference will be given to candidates with at least one degree in forestry from a program accredited by the Society of American Foresters or professional work history in the forestry sector.

APPOINTMENT AS ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR OR PROFESSOR: Candidates seeking appointment with tenure at these ranks should have a research and publication record in forest finance related topics that is commensurate with career stage. To be eligible for tenure upon appointment, candidates must have been tenured at a prior institution and bring a demonstrably national reputation to the institution. Candidates must be approved for tenure upon appointment before hire. The successful candidate who has met the criteria for tenure and the rank of Associate Professor or Professor will be nominated to hold the endowed Hargreaves Professor of Forest Finance, subject to approval by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
