What We Can Achieve Together:

The Fire Management Technician participates in wildland fire operations, including burn unit preparation, ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, monitoring, and other tasks as assigned. Positions will be focused on the ecological management and restoration of longleaf pine sandhill ecosystems associated with the Chattahoochee Fall Line (CFL) for rare fire adapted species such as red-cockaded woodpecker, gopher tortoise, and carnivorous plants.  Other tasks may include fence removal, timber marking, equipment maintenance, and general stewardship work

As part of ongoing professional development, technicians will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials.  In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in wildland fire suppression activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies, either as a TNC employee or as a volunteer or short-term employee of the partner entity (such as an administratively determined, short term federal employee). May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.

By joining our Fire Management Team, you will be a part of a highly functioning team working together to restore native ecosystems in and around the Chattahoochee Fall Line Ecoregion located in northern Marion County, Georgia. Other opportunities may be presented to assist partner agencies such as the US Forest Service at Tuskegee National Forest and Georgia Dept. Of Natural Resources (GA-DNR) Wildlife Management Areas (WMA). Our team consists of a dedicated group who are leading the conservation effort on multiple fronts and who expertly bring strategy and action together. 

Qualifications:

What You’ll Bring:

  • High school diploma and 6 months of related experience.   
  • Must be qualified as a Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2), including Introduction to ICS (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130), and one training burn serving under the supervision of a qualified FFT2. See http://www.tncfiremanual.org/firefighter.htm     
  • Must achieve physical fitness standard as determined by local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual. Must be able to walk 3 miles in 45 minutes carrying 45lbs.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment.                         
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g. First Aid, CPR).
  • Must have valid driver’s license and good driving record.
  • Ability and willingness to follow instructions from colleagues.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multicultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 

  • 6 months-1 year of related experience.

  • This job posting will close on October 18, 2024

  • The position will run from January 6, 2025, to June 27, 2025. Begin, and end dates are flexible within the timeframe and maximum 6-month allotment. Preference will be given to applicants for a full 6-month commitment.

Salary:
Compensation and Housing:
• $18.25/hour – $21.50/hour depending on experience and qualifications.
• Housing with basic utilities will be provided in Marion County, Georgia, at no cost to the employee upon signing and agreeing to lease terms, and the employee must live in provided housing with other Fire Management Technicians and Crew Manager to maximize the effectiveness of the crew and to provide a general security presence for TNC’s equipment.
