Job Description:

The FWC’s Northeast Region is seeking a highly motivated candidate for an exciting and challenging opportunity to lead a team of biologist and technicians managing two WMAs in central Florida known for their exceptional natural communities, Triple N Ranch and Herky Huffman/Bull Creek Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) in Osceola County, FL. This position serves as a Fish and Wildlife Biological Scientist III on a highly productive team of land managers to restore and enhance habitats for the benefit of a variety of species and for the enjoyment of Florida residents and visitors. The successful candidate will lead all aspects of management of the WMAs including application of ~12,000 acres of prescribed fire annually and conducting mechanical and chemical vegetation control (mowing, roller chopping, herbicide, etc.) to manage habitats. Habitat improvement is focused on imperiled and locally important species including, but not limited to, red-cockaded woodpecker, striped newt, northern bobwhite, white-tailed deer, and wild turkey. The successful candidate will coordinate the operation of hunter check stations on the two WMAs to collect biological data of hunter harvested game.

Additionally, the position will coordinate a variety of wildlife surveys for both game and non-game species including red-cockaded woodpeckers, northern bobwhite, white-tailed deer, and Bachman sparrows. This position oversees all aspects of running the WMAs including purchasing, annual reports, data entry, GIS, and harvest reports. The incumbent will interact with various partner agencies and the public to provide information concerning wildlife and area management, rules and regulations. Occasionally the incumbent will attend regional and divisional meetings as well as various trainings as needed

Qualifications:

Incumbent must have excellent verbal and written communication skills and leadership skills, be able to work well with team members and interact positively with stakeholders and cooperators.

Other knowledge, skills and abilities include:

Knowledge of principles of ecology and wildlife management

Knowledge of the common and imperiled species of Florida

Knowledge of the principles of fire ecology and experience with the application of prescribed fire

Knowledge and experience in wildlife and land management practices including mechanical and chemical vegetation control

Knowledge and experience in supervising multiple team members

Knowledge of outdoor recreational activities including hunting and fishing

Ability to work as part of a team and independently

Experience conducting wildlife surveys and summarizing biological data

Knowledge and experience in ArcGIS and GPS and its application to land management and surveys

Proficient with Windows and Microsoft Office applications

Ability to identify common and imperiled wildlife species.

Ability to operate outdoors under harsh weather conditions

Ability to write technical reports.

Ability to plan and prioritize work assignments and multi-task

Ability to operate vehicles, ATVs and trailers

Salary:
$45,000/year
