Job Description, Responsibilities and Required Qualifications or Skills

Under general supervision, plans and develops complex research and survey projects to protect, evaluate, and/or improve fish habitat, fish populations or fisheries on a regional or state-wide basis. Oversees operations and the fisheries management of Hugh Gillis, Ocmulgee, and Dodge County public fishing areas, the Oconee River, and three state park lakes. Responsible for implementing regional angler recruitment, retention, and reactivation activities, fish contaminant sampling, and the investigation of fish kills. Critically reviews project plans, technical documents, and environmental assessments for fisheries impacts, and makes recommendations for mitigating adverse impacts and improving fish populations or fisheries. Provides technical fisheries management assistance to individuals, corporations, and government agencies. Supervises and administers purchasing, budgeting, accounting, inventory control, and report preparations associated with state and federally-funded projects to comply with laws, rules and contractual agreements. Work may include weekends, nights, and holidays and assisting with Department emergency response efforts.

Minimum Qualifications:

Master’s Degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university.

OR

Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or a related field from an accredited college or university

AND

One year of related experience.

OR

One year of experience required at a lower-level Fisheries Biologist 1, (NRP070) or position equivalent.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  1. Freshwater fisheries management experience

DNR/WRD employment experience
